Very strong rumor right now that there is a press conference scheduled in Flint today and that the team is going to announce the Generals are folding at the conclusion of the season.

This rumor was posted over on FYC and Generals beat writer Brendan Savage responded to it by basically quoting Slapshot. So he didn't directly address it, but indirectly made it quite clear that he thinks they're folding after the season.

Savage publicly outed Fort Wayne's owners earlier a couple of weeks ago as being the parties keeping the Generals afloat financially (barely), and criticized and blamed them for the team's equipment woes (at one point the goalies had 2 good sticks to share, and that's it... they also have been using Saginaw Spirit pucks during Generals games because the Frankes could get them cheaper). Whether that played any role or not, it's quite clear that the Frankes have begun to feel the financial pinch now with bankrolling other teams and they maybe already weren't going to keep Flint around next season anyways.

This would leave the IHL once again at only 5 teams (QC, BLM, FTW, PTH, DAY) heading into the offseason, with Muskegon having already announced they're folding and starting up a USHL team instead.

It is my understanding that in order to allow players on international work visas to play a league must have a minimum of 6 teams. Also, QC has a clause in their contract to allow them to leave should the league drop below 6 teams. It looks like the Franke's are going to have to scramble to keep the IHL afloat. Personally, I don't see them allowing the IHL to fold and then taking the Komet's to another league where they will have to give up control of the league and face the possiblity of signing with an affiliate to compete.

Time will tell.....

I think the IHL ie Frankes now know the writing is on the wall, and will begins courting other leagues.

I'm kind of disappointed to see the IHL having so much trouble. I like the idea of it, a regional bus league with just a few teams. You get to know players from other teams and it allows for a lot of rivalries to build, every day though more and more bad news seems to flow from it. I've really enjoyed the Gems games in Dayton and seeing hockey at Hara. The Gems are currently planning on coming back next season, if the IHL folds I hope they wind up in the ECHL with Cincinnati. Would love to have that rivalry/road trip back.

Fort Wayne is a great minor league hockey town with a great arena and great fan following. I wonder where the Komets will end up should the IHL fold.

If the FHL (doing business as the IHL) folds, the Franke's will sell the hockey rights to Fort Wayne to someone that would relocate an AHL team there. New Jersey is looking around for a new home for its AHL franchise (Lowell, MA). Fort Wayne Devils?

It seems like it be a hard sell with the local population to drop the Komets name. That brand has been around for quite some time.

So what was the press conference for? Are the Generals officially folding?

Absolutely nothing happened. There wasn't even a press conference, when all was said and done. I don't know what the heck is going on up there...
