Evidently there is a lot of serious talk at NHL about changing the rule where a team gets one point for an overtime/shoot out loss. The original rationale was to get closer races and that a team that plays 60 minutes in a tie should get some reward. Never understood it as none of the other major sports awards points etc for an overtime or extra inning loss. As far a close races go, below is the American Conference standings today and if no points awarded for a loss. Have applied tie breakers where necessary. Would be interested in other opinions as to which system you prefer and why
Three Points/game Two Points/game Charlotte 91 Cincinnati 84 K-Zoo 89 Charlotte 84 Elmira 70 Elmira 70 SC 88 K -Zoo 80 Cinn 87 SC 76 Florida 83 Florida 74 Reading 76 Reading 70 Toledo 76 Toledo 70
As you can see still close races for various seedings. Only team whose seed changes more than one spot is of course the Cyclones who go from fifth to first. Forget that however and let me know your thoughts on changing the system. I would like to see two point games only and not an extra point for losing. I think you tend to see teams slow it down the last 5 minutes of regulation playing for the one point much like they did pre overtime/shootout. Only benefit I see is as a fan I feel better driving home after getting one point for an overtime/shootout loss than I do if they got nothing, but a win is a win and a loss is a loss. |

Columbus GM Scott Howson proposed a change to the OT/Shootout format by removing it [the shootout] from the win/loss equation. OT would occur as usual but the shootout would only occur for the fans having no bearing on the result of the game. IF a game isn't decided in regulation of OT then it would be a tie. The concept was apparently well received by the other GM's at the winter meetings but it still has a ways to go.
In regards to points, if the hockey's governing bodies are hell bent on keeping the 2 point system then I would agree that they should eliminate the point for the OT loser and eliminate the shootout. It's either win in OT and get 2 points or it's a tie and each team gets a point.
Personally, I would like to see hockey move to the scoring system similar to what European Football (soccer) uses where the winner gets 3 points. A 3 point system would put an emphasis on winning in regulation. If a game was tied at the end of regulation each team would get a point. The winning team would receive a second point for winning in OT. I would eliminate the shootout and either extend the OT to a 10 minute sudden death or a two 5 minute period format where the 1st 5 minute period must be played in its entirety and the 2nd would be a sudden death if needed. For example, if team A scores 1min into OT then team B would have 4minutes to try an even it up all the while team A could keep the pressure on and score again. if the score was still tied at the end of the 1st 5minute period, a 2nd 5min period would be played with the 1st team to score winning. If the score is still tied after both OT periods then the game is simply a tie with both teams receiving 1 pt. |

| I would prefer the three point system (3 for Reg W, 2 for OT/SO W, 1 for OT/SO loss). As for the OT/SO, I would leave the OT & SO as is in the E and expand to 5 shooters in the NHL. |

Case in point was last night's game vs K-Zoo. Assume it was the last game of the year and we were the same two points behind. Rather than going to OT/SO tied where a win gives us the division with two points and none for K-Zoo, the game was essentially over at the end of regulation because K-Zoo got one point. Cyclones would have won the game but lost the division because of that one point.
Problem I have with using soccer type points is that most pro soccer games are 0-0 or 1-0. Not a lot of scoring. I think you should get all the points if you win at any time and lose the points if you lose the game at any point. You don't get extra credit for losing in the 12th inning or losing the basketball game in OT. In football you can lose everything in OT without even getting on offense!!. |

| Get rid of the 1 point for OT or Shootout loss. It was ok when they allowed ties to have 3 point games. But i'm tired of watching at the end of regulation where often times teams, especially if they are on the road, just play it safe trying to get 1 point. You shouldn't be rewarded for not doing your job, which is to win the hockey game. 2 points for a win, 0 for a loss. Or maybe 3 and 1 might be ok. But there needs to enough of a difference between wins and OT/SO losses if you're gonna give a point for an OT/SO loss |
