It isn't that a goalie can't play all the games in a series--most coaches will ride the hot goalie but very seldom in the NHL do you see two playoff games in a series played over two nights .
My concern is that we now only have one goalie and there is no one to replace him with or rotate with. To the replacement issue, if Smith gives up three quick ones in game one who do we replace him with? If you leave him in during a bad night, that can effect the whole series. Most coaches are a lot quicker pulling a goalie in the playoffs but we now don't have anyone to step in. To the second point about rotation, all I am pointing out is both of them have played much worse in the 2nd game when they play both games of back to back games over two nights. When they alternate these games, the 2nd game record and GAA is much better with a fresh goalie. These are just statistics however and Webber will decide if he rotates or rides the hot hand. I would just like him to have the choice--he has none now. Would be nice to have a relief pitcher to go to. No one in the bullpen now. |

Its not about going with one goalie during the playoffs. Its about rest. With 5 games in 6 days there isn't any.
And we need somebody on the bench that has played some games this year IN CASE Smith has a bad game. An EBUG isn't the answer to that in the playoffs.
This isn't rocket science, so I'm sure if there are any options Webber plans to use them. I just hope there are options.

If Smith has a bad game then it more than likely won't matter if he gets pulled because the game will already be lost. If the cyclones are getting blown out by 4 goals or something and Smith gets pulled then Lee will come in and give it his best. He is actually an average goalie for those who have never seen him play. Not a guy to keep on a roster, but if he needs to come in and make a few saves in mop up duty then he's more than capable. |

I wonder if it is too late to actually sign Lee as a "real" goalie and not just an "EBUG"? This would allow us to use him freely in a game -not just as a last resort. If we take both games 1 & 2, game 3 in SC will lean heavily to them. This could be a prime chance to start Lee and give Smith the much needed day off to be ready for 4 & 5. Before you jump on this idea, think what happens if SC blows us out in game 3 and Smith MUST stay in because Lee is only an EBUG. I at least want the chance to pull Smith out in game 3 (or even 1 & 2) if it turns ugly.It never helps to beat a goalie down to frustration level. |

Lee WILL NOT be signed to a player contract for 2 reasons: 1) he never played a minuted in a regular season game and therefore isn't eligible to be put on the playoff roster as a regular and 2) signing him would take a roster spot from Mayer who WILL BE back, provided estimates about Sanford's injury were correct. Sanford's injury was expected to keep him sidelined for 7 to 10 days and we are now exceeding that time frame.
The timing of Mayer's recall made things difficult for Chuck. For one, as mentioned above, the time frame of Sanford's injury indicates that Mayer will be reassigned sometime during the 1st round. Also, Chuck mentioned at the last Coach's Show that he had called a few goalies but no one would commit because Chuck could guarantee them playing time or a spot on the roster. I'm sure the communication Chuck had with Hamilton regarding Mayer going into the last weekend still indicated that Robbie would be back sometime during the 1st round; had it been otherwise Chuck would have been able to promise an incoming back up prospect a roster spot.
This isn't the 1st time the Cyclones have entered the playoffs with an EBUG. In 07-08 the squad started with Max Daigneault and Lee as Ceddy was on recall to Hamilton. If I recall, there were even bigger questions regarding whether Ceddy would make it back.
The roster's have been sent to the league offices and will be released to the public sometime this afternoon. I'm just as concerned with the lack of defensemen as I am the goal tending. The 'Clones are a defensive team and with Cashman in Milwaukee and Motherwell in Bridgeport, the Boys will be starting the playoffs with just 6 d-men. |

Yeah, exactly why I figured the ONLY reason Webber had not already signed a back-up is because he has communication with Hamilton that Mayer will be back this week. Lets just hope nothing goes wrong with that plan.
As for Hamilton sending players back because they have wrapped everything up and the games are pretty meaningless... Nice wishful thinking, but thats exactly when you DON'T get those players sent back down because they can actually get playing time at the higher level.
Remember... We root for a DEVELOPMENT league team. That sucks sometimes, but its part of the game and part of the reason we can buy season tickets for the cost of one good NHL seat.

You guys worry too much. You'll be fine if you have to ride Smith. Most every other ECHL team wishes they had the problem of losing a goalie to the AHL and then having to settle for a goalie like Smith instead.
I know it's a condensed series but hey... it's the minors. That's how it always seems to work, no matter the league. |

Okay this is two years in a row starting the playoffs with an EBUG with no ECHL experience. If Lee is still around next year, I think we need to find a stretch early in the year to actually get him in a game and find out if he can handle the action. Starting out last year with veteran Daigneault is a lot different than rookie Smith this year. |
