CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones claimed a 6-1 win over the South Carolina Stingrays to grab a one game to none lead in the best of five Kelly Cup playoffs series on Tuesday night at U.S. Bank Arena. Brian O'Hanley led the attack with two goals and an assist, while Jimmy Kilpatrick also had a pair of goals for the Cyclones. Jeremy Smith turned aside 31 shots in the triumph. A three goal second period explosion blew the game open.
O'Hanley, who scored three of his seven regular season goals against the Stingrays, scored the insurance goal in the second period and closed the game with a score with 26 seconds to play. He also finished plus-three on the evening.
South Carolina, which posted a 41-19-12 recordtied for the South Division and American Conference titles, is meeting the Cyclones (44-25-3second in the North Division) in the Kelly Cup playoffs for the third straight year. In 2008, Cincinnati knocked off the Stingrays in a five-game conference championship series en route to taking the Kelly Cup. Last year, the Stingrays swept the Cyclones in the conference finals to capture their third league title. South Carolina is the fourth-seeded team, while Cincinnati is the fifth-seed.
The teams exchanged goals in the opening period. South Carolina started the scoring with a power play goal 4:07 into the contest. Michael Dubuc's shot from the top of the right circle came courtesy of Nikita Kashirsky and Johann Kroll. Cincinnati would answer when the captain Barret Ehgoetz notched his first goal of the postseason from inside the left circle at 11:41. Hans Benson and Mathieu Aubin had the helpers. The shots favored the Stingrays, 11-8, in the period.
The Cyclones blew the game open in the second period with three goals to grab a 4-1 edge at the second intermission. Jimmy Kilpatrick's first goal of the playoffs put the club ahead 2-1. Matt Pierce and Benson had the assists at 13:45. Less than two minutes later, Brian O'Hanley on a two-on-one break finished with a drive from the right face off circle for his first of the playoffs at 15:27. Benson and Ehgoetz had the helpers. Kilpatrick's second of the night came a bit more than two minutes later at 17:36. O'Hanley fired a shot from just inside the blue line and Kilpatrick in the high slot area deflected the puck into the ice and bounced it past South Carolina goaltender Todd Ford. Dustin Sproat added the second assist. The shots favored the Stingrays, 12-10, in the period.
In the third period, the Cyclones netted another pair of goals. The lead extended to 5-1 when Dustin Sproat raced up the right sidetaking a pass from Brock Sheahan on his backhand and shielding a defender with his body as he reached the top of the goal crease. Sproat slipped the puck to his forehand and slipped it past Ford, just inside the left post at 7:38. The final goal came from O'Hanleyhis second of the nightat 19:34. The shot came from the left face off circle from Sproat and Will Ortiz, who picked up his first pro point in just his second game. The shots favored the Stingrays, 9-7, in the period and 32-25 for the game.
Cincinnati was zero-for-one on the power play, while South Carolina was one-for-two. Jeremy Smith took the victory for the Cyclones, making 31 saves. Todd Ford took the loss, stopping 19 shots.
The winner of this series will play the winner of top-seeded Charlotte and eighth-seeded Toledo. Toledo leads that best of five series, one game to none, following a 7-2 win in the Glass City tonight.
The next game of the Cincinnati Cyclones USA Collision Centers postseason will be the second game of this best of five series, played at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday night (April 7) at 7:30pm. The game will be carried on the internet at www.cycloneshockey.com.
Tickets for the 2010-11 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. A special open house on Tuesday, April 13 from 4-8pm will allow fans a chance to see the facility up close and even skate on the ice. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 3. All road Kelly Cup playoff games will be carried on ESPN 1530 and on the club's website at: www.cycloneshockey.com.

Fun game to watch if you're a Cyclones fan. Too bad the crowd was such a disappointment.
What's it going to take to make this city appreciate this franchise and the fact that they go to the playoffs EVERY year?
I'm guessing tomorrow night will be just as bad attendance-wise, except traffic and parking will suck because of the large group of people watching the Reds lose next door. :(

Smith stood on his head in the first ten minutes of the 2nd period before the offense kicked in. Great game for whole team.
I agree on attendance. No excuse. Only 1080 which is probably the lowest this year, Nice night, no Reds, no NCAA, Only thing I can think of is lack of promotion. Nothing at all in Enquirer and no promo about beer special. Noticed very few families and very few college aged. Not knowing until Sunday when we were playing didnt give much time at all. Just 2 paragraphs in paper would have helped.
Tonight could be even worse with Reds traffic and higher parking. LaCroix scored his first AHL goal tonight |

The Cyclones have been, are now, and will always rank behind a Major League Baseball team, a National Football League team, two major college basketball programs, one of the top college football teams in the Big East, and high school football in terms of fan interest in this town.

one minor correction to your statement DH...... " The Cyclones..." should really read 'HOCKEY'
It is an understatement to say that if the game does not have the word 'ball' in it, interest/coverage by the media and (in general) fan support tends to be lacking. This is a battle that has and probably will go on and on.
As hockey fans, all we can do is support our team and keep pushing for recognition for what they achieve year in and year out!! And do our best to bring new fans to the game of hockey! |

I agree about the lousy attendence , no excuse if you're a true Cyclones fan. My son and I were at the game, and disappointed to see the crowd ( or lack of) On another note, will the StingRays player involved in the bru-ha,ha at the end get a suspension for the abuse of an official penelty that was assesed to him? |

Looks like him and Hans received a game misconduct. Chances are they will both be sitting out tonight. |

Thanks for the breaking news. /sarcasm.
But as noted, the weather was excellent, there was nothing else going on, and its a professional sports playoff game for $14. 1000 people is just pathetic.

Suppose to rain hard tonight. Lets hope it holds off so people come down, its begins to pour, the game gets cancelled, and many decide to walk up to the Cyclones game.
Nice game coverage in Enquirer today. Real coverage by a reporter with player/coaches quotes and not just using the team's press release |

Before we panic too much, attendance was down across the board in the league last night. The very small advance notice for these games hurts, and hurts a lot. I'm not excusing it, but this is a good explanation, IMO. |

I had a great time. Didn't get off work until 7, and made it to USBA with plenty of time to spare. Changed in the parking lot, ran up those dang stairs from the landing, got a bite to eat, and saw the opening face off! Can't wait to do it all again tonight! |

This is not the way that I wanted my first post to go, but here it is. I have seen many posts on this board that talk about how annoying uneducated hockey fans are. Drinking too much beer, not knowing the rules or the players, etc. Now however, there are several comments about the size of the crowds last night. Sure the crowd was small, but I think it was all core Cyclones fans that love the team and appreciate the game. There is not a lot we as individuals can do to influence the size of the crowd, so I will just continue to come to the games and root as loudly as I can. On the bright side, the crowd was really loud in relation to its size, and it was great to run the the bathroom, stop by the concession stand, and be back in my seat in 5 minutes. And though the players were certainly disappointed by the size of the crowd, they seemed appreciative of us as well. |

I expect game 2 tonight to be much different than last night. Certainly SC will make some adjustments. Also, without Morehouse and maybe without Benson, perhaps SC will play more physical. I feel like, at the start of this series, SC has a better team than we do. However, you cannot over estimate the the power of Chuck Weber and the leadership on this team. It will be a different kind of game tonight, but I still like our chances.

According to the rulebook, it takes 2 Abuse of Officials game misconducts or two game misconducts under the general category for a suspension to be an automatic suspension.
Given that Robinson didn't get suspended after the Johnstown game on Friday, I doubt that Benson/Carberry will be suspended for what happened last night. |

I don't know if we're helpless when it comes to the crowd size. Any kind of word-of-mouth promotion we can contribute to as fans is helpful.. Tell the people you come in contact with everyday (friends, co-workers, etc) how much fun you had at the game. Just don't be overbearing about it. Don't overpromote because that can be annoying. If you have a Facebook/Twitter/MySpace account, "share" the announcements that the team makes, Retweet info about games and other events.
If you know someone who came to a game, be gracious! Thank them for coming, and encourage them to come back. I think little things like this can help. But it's up to us as fans to do it.
Just my two cents. |
