CHARLESTON, South Carolina - Gregg Johnson's first goal of the Kelly Cup playoffs at 6:09 of overtime kept South Carolina's season alive in a 3-2 win over the Cincinnati Cyclones. The past two Kelly Cup champions are now even at two games apiece in their best of five American Conference Quarterfinals series. Game five is Sunday at 7pm in South Carolina (carried on ESPN 1530 locally).
The teams exchanged goals in the first period. South Carolina notched the first marker with Dylan Yeo rushing up the right side and cutting across the top of the goal crease and slipping the puck past Jeremy Smith. It was Yeo's first score of the playoffs at 11:21, as Derek Keller had the assist. The score ended a shutout streak of 122:10 for Smith against the Stingrays in the series. The Cyclones would even the scores at one when Barret Ehgoetz collected his second score of the playoffs with a shot just inside the right post at 18:58. Josh Heidinger and Mathieu Aubin had the assists on the goal. The shots favored South Carolina, 8-5, in the period.
After surviving the opening minute of the second period that saw South Carolina pepper Jeremy Smith with three shots, the Cyclones settled in and grabbed the lead at 14:33. Ian McKenzie at the right post tipped in an Ehgoetz shot from the left wing side for his first postseason marker. Will Ortiz had the second assist. But the lead was short-lived. Just 1:16 later, at 15:49, Trevor Bruess notched his first of the playoffs. His shot just under the crossbar was assisted by Jake Hauswirth and Keller. The shots again favored the Stingrays, 10-9.
There was no scoring in the third period, but the Stingrays had two power play chances in the term. The shots favored Cincinnati, 6-3, in the frame.
Johnson scored his goal at 6:09 of the overtime, tipping in a shot from Kellerwho finished the night with three assists. The shots for the period were even at four each and for the game the Stingrays won the shots battle, 25-24.
South Carolina was zero for three on the power play, while the Cyclones were zero for one. Jeremy Smith suffered the loss despite a 22 save performance. Todd Ford collected the win, also stopping 22 shots.
South Carolina, which posted a 41-19-12 regular season recordtied for the South Division and American Conference titles, is meeting the Cyclones (44-25-3second in the North Division) in the Kelly Cup playoffs for the third straight year. In 2008, Cincinnati knocked off the Stingrays in a five-game conference championship series en route to taking the Kelly Cup. Last year, the Stingrays swept the Cyclones in the conference finals to capture their third league title. South Carolina is the fourth-seeded team, while Cincinnati is the fifth-seed.
The next game of the Cincinnati Cyclones USA Collision Centers postseason will be the fifth game of this best of five series, played at North Charleston Coliseum on Sunday night (April 11) at 7pm. The game will be carried on the internet at www.cycloneshockey.com and broadcast on ESPN 1530.
The winner of this series will meet the winner of the Charlotte-Toledo series. Charlotte leads that best of five affair, two games to one with the fourth game scheduled for tomorrow afternoon. The best of seven American Conference Semifinals series will begin after April 14.
Tickets for the 2010-11 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale.
