CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones, the ECHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League, announced they have protected the ECHL playing rights of 22 players for the 2010-11 season. Teams are allowed to protect as many players as they wish provided the players protected meet the guidelines as defined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the ECHL and the Professional Hockey Players' Association which state that teams shall retain the rights to each player that:
1. Signed a Standard Players Contract (SPC) in 2009-10, and has not been traded or released, OR 2. Signed Standard Players Contract in 2009-10, and was recalled to the National Hockey League, the American Hockey League or an International Ice Hockey Federation team, and has not been traded or released, OR 3. Received a 2009-10 Qualifying Offer for the current season, and DID NOT sign a Standard Players Contract, and has not been traded or released, OR 4. Has been suspended by the team or League, and has not been traded or released, OR 5. Signed Standard Players Contract on or after the first day of the 2009-10 regular season, then subsequently signed an NHL/AHL contract, and has not been traded or released, OR 6. Has executed the ECHL Retirement Form, and has not been traded or released
The Cyclones have protected the rights to forwards Mathieu Aubin, Hans Benson, Ryan Del Monte, Barret Ehgoetz, Josh Heidinger, Adam Henrich, Jimmy Kilpatrick, Chris Morehouse, Will Ortiz, Matt Pierce, Scott Reynolds, Brett Robinson and Dustin Sproat. The club also protected the playing rights to defensemen Jamie Coghlan, Cullen Eddy, Shawn Fensel, Doug Krantz, Brett Motherwell, Brian O'Hanley, Kevin Roeder, Brock Sheahan and Dwayne Zinger.
Teams are allowed to sign players on their own protected list up until July 1. At that time, teams will be able to make Qualifying Offers to as many as eight players for the 2010-11 season.
The Cincinnati Cyclones will open training camp in early October. Season tickets for the Cyclones are currently on sale and can be obtained by contacting the team's sales department at 513-421-PUCK (7825).

I believe that players that are assigned here by the AHL teams are not Chuck's to protect. The parent team can assign them wherever they want. Chuck can only protect the players that he signed for the Cyclones.
Anybody please correct me if I am wrong. |

Yes, you can only protect players who are signed to an ECHL deal. Milwaukee/Hamilton owns the rights to the other players listed. When I spoke to Mark at the championship rally he said he isnt under contract with Milwaukee anymore.
Ive heard that Cashman is going to Europe, and I heard from another person (in chicago/milwaukee area) that Jozsa is retiring. I know they mentioned it at the rally but I thought it was a joke, but who knows?
McKenzie did nearly nothing with Milwaukee so who knows if they will resign him. LaCroix didnt do all that great in limited play with Hamilton, but I dont think they would get rid of him. Especially if they have a few forwards move to up the Habs or go to another team. |

If Scott Reynolds decides to return to the states after the European season or for any reason the Cyclones have his ECHL rights. He can't sign with anyone else in the league unless the Cyclones give him the ok. |

Out of the AHL assigned players I think Cashman could get a good AHL look with how he played in Milwaukee, the coaches really liked him but his age and Europe might play into the chance of going overseas, Josza is getting old and he got his championship, Van is AHL material when placed on the right team, Lacroix plays really well at the ECHL level and deserves a good shot with Hamilton, McKenzie maybe will stay in the ECHL or go overseas because his A capability is not a lot. Mayer and Smith are just 20-21 so they could be back next year if they stay in their respective teams. |

I would doubt Mayer would be back simply b/c the Habs wont have huge depth with having to get rid of either Halak (free agent) or Price (overpaid and would be tough to move).
The Predators have insane depth, 2 solid NHL guys now, Dex and Pickard (2008 1st rounder) in the AHL, AND they just signed a draft pick from 2 years ago who has been playing in Europe and is expected to be in the AHL this upcoming season. So it is possible they would keep Jeremy down here again, unless they get rid of at least 1 goalie. |

I'm afraid I also am not all that up on how the protected list works, so someone feel free to enlighten me.
It indicates teams have until July 1 to sign them. If a player elects not to sign back with the Cyclones, what happens after July 1. Does he become a "Free agent?" If that is the case, I don't know if I would be surprised to see some of them hold off until Coach Weber's future is more clear. |
...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones! |

The "Protected List really doesn't mean squat. All it means is that we have the "Rights" to these players until July 1st. If the Cyclones had any outstanding trades to finish players from this list could be used to complete the trade.
On July 1st, teams will submit a list of 8 players to the League which have been given a "Qualifying" offer. Any player not Qualified will become a free agent.
I'll post more later tonight on CycWords. |

So are the Cyclones still signed as affiliations with Montreal and Nashville for next year or is that to be determined still? |

I believe our affiliation agreements are for one year only. It always seems that both Montreal and Nashville re-up at the last minute. On the other hand it seems that the teams that make their affiliation agreements early are the teams that are switching affiliations so the longer we hear nothing, the better.
Nashville and Montreal have to be pleased with what Coaches Weber & Stork has done with the players sent to us. The affiliated players get a lot of ice time and a TON of playoff experience which is the main reason players are sent down. |
