quote: After his playing career finished, Gratz started coaching in the Class A Mid-Atlantic Hockey League. His Indiana (Pa.) Ice Miners were 31-1-0 with a 26-game winning streak when the league folded in 2008. He came back the next season to coach the New Jersey Rockhoppers of the Class A Eastern Professional Hockey League to a 32-16-2 regular-season record.
After a 2-7 start, the Rockhoppers qualified for the playoffs by winning the next-to-last game of the regular season, and then beat the first-place Brooklyn Aces in three games to win the league playoff title.
The league and the team folded last summer so Gratz returned to Penn State where he was an assistant coach and the goaltenders coach. Sometimes he'd sleep in the locker room, and sometimes his paychecks weren't worth the paper they were printed on, but Gratz kept pushing himself and his players.
Gratz coached former Cyclone Chris Ferazzoli for two years in a very low level of 'A" hockey. The leagues that he coached in were far closer to elite beer leagues than the SPHL.
This is really going out on a limb for the Gems. It's hard for me to think that an unknown like Gratz with seemingly few connections to the pro game will be able to recruit very effectively. He not only will have to overcome his anonymity, but the baggage and sketchy reputation of the Gems franchise as well.
If this is all that's left out there, then I just might have to throw my hat into the ring for the Cyclones job should Weber get the nod in Rochester |

WOW. Coach and GM!! Bet that will be a real positive for recruiting players!!
With all his Ft Wayne ties and lack of experience, perhaps the Frankes are behind this bankrolling another team in hopes of keeping the ever silent CHL-IHL merger alive. Losing Dayton could really hurt at this point in negotiations.
Stan Drulia must have run fast from Dayton all the way to Wheeling. |

Wow! According to the Centre Daily Times, Dayton jumped to the ECHL overnight:

The Dayton Gems of the ECHL are putting the future of the franchise into the young hands of a man with strong ties to Centre County.
It's funny that even though Gratz mentions Dayton in the CHL, the reporter continues to make reference to the ECHL.
Research FAIL. |
