CINCINNATI, Ohio - The 2010 Kelly Cup Champion Cincinnati Cyclones, proud affiliate of the NHL's Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, announced today that they have named 35-year-old Scott Fankhouser as the new Assistant Coach.

A 1994 11th round pick of the St. Louis Blues, Fankhouser played seven years professionally including stops in the NHL, AHL, ECHL, IHL, and Europe. In 16 top-level games, the Bismarck, North Dakota native posted a 3.20 goals-against average (GAA) and an 89.5 save percentage. In the 2000-01 season, as a member of the Orlando Solar Bears (IHL), he earned the James Norris Memorial Trophy which is given to the league's best goaltender. In that same season, Fankhouser played with current Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde.

Prior to his professional career, Fankhouser spent three years playing with UMass-Lowell. After serving as a backup during his first two seasons, he earned the starting job in 1998-99 posting a 9-12-0 record with a 2.78 GAA.

After getting injured during his final season as a player in 2008-09, Fankhouser joined Skalde behind the Bloomington Prairie Thunder bench as an assistant coach.

"Scott is a very well-organized coach with a tremendous passion for our game," said Skalde. "Knowing the type of person he is, and having worked with him in the past, certainly gives me a high comfort level when deciding to bring him aboard. He'll be a strong asset to our hockey club."

Fans will have a chance to meet the new Assistant Coach in person tomorrow (Saturday) at the West Chester Meijer during the final weekend of Concrete Clones from Noon-2pm. West Chester Meijer is located at 7390 Tylersville Road.

The defending Kelly Cup Champion Cyclones open their home schedule on Saturday, October 30 at U.S. Bank Arena against the Wheeling Nailers. Discounted ticket packages for the 2010-11 season are available now. For more information, call 513.421.PUCK (7825) extension 3 or visit CyclonesHockey.com.

I remember Fankhouser from his year with the Toledo Storm.

I was at one game and there was a bench clearing brawl between Toledo and whomever they were playing and Fankhouse ( a goalie) was in a big time slugfest with the opponent's goalie. What stands out in my mind is how he was grinning while getting punched

A check of his stats shows that he was a goalie who liked to mix it up-the last 5 or so seasons of his career he averaged about 50 PIM per year.

I think he and Skalde will bring plenty of spunk and enthusiasm to the Cyclones this season. I look forward to a few sticks and water bottles flying off the bench when there are some lame calls which go against the Cyclones.

It's also interesting that Fankhouser played for Orlando in 2000-01. He was a teammate of Skalde's and Weber knows him as well.

"David Desharnais will be invisible during 5 on 5 hockey. IN THE AHL"
