Jonathan Higgins Signs First Pro Deal and Doug Krantz Returns to Cyclones Blue-Line

CINCINNATI, Ohio - CINCINNATI, Ohio - The 2010 Kelly Cup Champion Cincinnati Cyclones, proud affiliate of the NHL's Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, announced today that they have agreed to terms with rookie Center Jonathan Higgins and have re-signed Defenseman Doug Krantz for the 2010-11 season.

Higgins enters his first year of professional hockey after completing a four year stint at the University of Vermont. The 6'1" native of Stratham, New Hampshire competed in 106 games for the Catamounts notching 15 points (7 goals, 8 assists, & 40 PIMS) in his collegiate career. Last year saw Higgins post career highs in goals (3g) and assists (4a).

"Jonathan is a young kid with tremendous upside," said Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. "He will add a physical element to our lineup and I truly believe the pro-game is more suited for his style of play."

Returning to the Cyclones blue-line is fourth year pro and Marysville, BC native Doug Krantz. Primarily a Defenseman, Krantz also spent time playing Forward at times for Chuck Weber in what was ultimately an injury shortened season. In limited playing time, the 6'3" Krantz scored nine points (4 goals and 5 assists) while accumulating seven penalty minutes during 19 regular season games. Krantz was also responsible for a goal and an assist during the Cyclones Kelly Cup playoff run. Doug began his professional career joining the Texas Brahmas for their '07-'08 playoff run. He spent his first full professional season playing for the Wheeling Nailers where he tallied 24 points over 66 games. Prior to playing professionally, Krantz earned four varsity letters at Cornell University. Krantz played in 131 games with the Big Red and collected 15 goals and 23 assists for 38 points. Doug played the 2003-04 season with Alberni Valley (BCHL) and picked up eleven goals and 34 assists for 45 points in 60 games.

"We are thrilled to have Doug back for another season in Cincinnati," said Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. "While last year he was slowed by injuries, I am excited to see Doug back on the ice progressing and taking the next steps in his hockey career."

The defending Kelly Cup Champion Cyclones open their home schedule on Saturday, October 30 at U.S. Bank Arena against the Wheeling Nailers. Discounted ticket packages for the 2010-2011 season are available now. For more information, call 513.421.PUCK (7825) extension 3 or visit CyclonesHockey.com.

Good to see Doug Krantz come back. After an injury shortened season it will be good to see him load up the slapper from the blue line again. Higgins sounds like a defensive forward with decent numbers(in the mold of Scott Reynolds maybe...).

Sounds like the blue line and the defensive forwards are filling in nicely. Hopefully the offensive talent will come in after the NHL/AHL camps.
