I thought that O'Hanley, Minella and Pierce stood out to me in the effort department with consistent hard work all night. Couple lines had one big spurt of energy/effort and it resulted in the two quick goals...but then it backed off again...
One knock I've heard is that the Preds beginning to feel Picard has been/is getting lazy...didn't see much last night to dispute that concern... |

Picard reminded me of a goalie that was overworked and now is over reacting on every move. He needs to calm down and play within himself and stop over extending after each puck. The results are not making the stop cleanly or fakes leave him unable to return to the proper position for defense. I'm not a goalie and can no way claim to do it, but you have to stay under control. |

Goalies often play like that when they don't trust the D in front of them.
Just sayin'. |

| Yeah, Chet (and Cheverie) both feel as if they have to make the spectacular save every time b/c of poor defensive play in front of them, and it makes them look bad and to a casual fan after seeing the GAA and save percentage, would assume they are trash. Nobody of an AHL/ECHL level of talent could succeed in net with the way the D is playing. |

Exactly.
Yes, there have been some soft goals. But just using Tuesday as an example Donati's goal was basically a penalty shot as he was totally uncontested and Tifu was standing all alone 5 feet from the crease on his goal.
You play defense that consitently poorly and the goalies get off their game in a hurry. No different than the QB that gets hit every time he drops back. In short order his mechanics go to crap and he starts making mistakes.
No, the goalies do not look good, but judgement needs to be reserved on them until there is some decent defensive play in front of them. They aren't getting much of a chance right now.

I'll give Chevy a pass as he's a rookie - recall how slowly Smith started last year - and give him a little while to settle into the league.
But I get the feel that Pickard's game is on the way down, and you can say otherwise all you want, but the two games I've seen him play this week he plays a lazy goal, which supports what I was told this summer (Nashville folks "not happy with his lazy play"). Poor defense in front is not a reason to give up on plays, to not even try to scramble back, get beat on simple 5-hole shots. Usually in such circumstances a goalie will try to over compensate and as a result get themselves out of position by trying too hard, and that simply isn't the case here... |
