TOLEDO, Ohio - Behind a 43-save shutout performance from Cyclones goaltender Marc Cheverie, the Cincinnati Cyclones (4-5-2-1) blanked the Toledo Walleye (3-5-1-1) by a 2-0 score in front of 6,013 at Huntington Center on Friday night.
For the fourth consecutive game, the Cyclones were able to tally first as Dylan Hunter chased down a loose puck in the neutral zone during a Walleye power play and managed to beat Toledo goalie Joe Palmer (L, 24 saves, 0-1-1) over the left pad for a 1-0 Cyclones lead. It was the first time this season that Cincinnati scored a shorthanded goal. It turned out to be the game-winner.
In the middle frame, the Cyclones capitalized on an odd-man rush when, at the 4:45 mark, Kevin Roeder pushed home a loose puck that was underneath Palmer's pad for his first goal of the season and a 2-0 Cyclones lead. Cincinnati Netminder Marc Cheverie (W, SO, 43 saves, 4-2-1-1) helped hold the lead in the second period, turning aside 12 Walleye offerings to keep his team on top by a pair of goals heading into the second intermission.
The Cheverie show continued in the third period, as he blocked 16 offerings in the final frame of regulation en route to a 43-save shutout his second blanking in three games. His 43 stops were also second-most he's made in a single game this season (Last Friday, he made 44 saves in an OTL to Trenton).
The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows: 1. Marc Cheverie (43 saves, shutout, winning goaltender) 2. Dylan Hunter (Game winning goal) 3. Kevin Roeder (Scored Cyclones 2nd goal)

After a slow start to his pro career, Cheverie has been stupid good.
He's got a 0.77 goals against average and a save percentage of 98.1% in his last four games.

The Cyclones now have 11 points in 12 games. Not too shabby given the fact that they had but one single win in their first nine games. |

hrc666 -------------------------------------------------------- I think Cheverie has come into his own, but I wish Pickard would at least get warm, if in fact, he is still with the team. But regardless who, I wish the Clones had a decent 2ND goalie, then I think this team would be pretty well off!

It's great to get some wins, but especially in this league you can't hang your hat on a hot goalie long term. We all know what often happens when a goalie starts playing really well around here.
This team is still shakey. They are giving up a TON of SOG and not taking very many. I think the last two wins have both seen 3 shots in the 3rd period. You can't keep hanging EVERYTHING on the goalie long term. In other words, of the recent wins, without a hot goalie we probably lose all of them. We're still getting generally outplayed.
I hate to keep being negative, but this is simply not a recipe to keep winning, even if the hot goalie doesn't get called up (and he likely will). Other than Cheverie, there just haven't been many improvements, and that is worrysome.

What I saw in the last home win that I didn't see in the first three home losses was rebound shots by the opponents. It's nice for a goalie to make the sweeping stop over to our guys for a possible fast break, but we aren't at that point yet. Right now I would rather see either goalie just make the stop and hold it for the face off. When the team gets clicking better we can think about keeping play going but right now just one shot per oppponent rush. This is also the reason for so many shots on goals. If every trip down the ice the opponents get three shots, the number is bloated. Same way with penalty kill-don't get cute- just clear the puck out and burn the clock off. |

Agreed.
This team has talent, but right now there is no flow to their game. It's almost like everyone is playing in a bubble out there (and that obviously won't work).
Snagging a few wins with a hot goalie can help keep us in the hunt for now (and, like last year, can steal you a playoff series), but we won't make it to the playoffs if the entire team doesn't start to show some progress.
I have my fingers crossed that, win or lose, we will see an overall well played game tonight. It'd be the first one of the year.
