Okay, here is another idea. First off, Scott Fankhouser MUST go. A former goalie who allowed the flaws of Chet Pickard to go on is not okay. I'm still not a Jarrod Skalde fan but I will give him half a season with the right assistant coach along side him. How about an old veteran coach who can help him become a head coach, but more important a coach who can step in and take over if this team is still failing at the All-Star break .

| Sorry Bags, but I don't agree. If you're going to make a change, make a change. That means both or neither. If not, then don't do anything. Don't do it half way. With that line of thinking you are basically setting him (and the season) up for failure. |

Not a fan of bringing him back. What type of player is "his guy" and why do people think that - despite a now three year track record of so-so hockey (with "his guys" for the most part) - if given the chance to get "his guys" that anything will change. Even this year, the guys he "was stuck with", for the most part, were part of a championship team (some on multiple cup teams) so it wasn't like he was burdened with nobodies. Who did he bring in that could be classified as one of "his guys"? What kind of contacts does he have? At the tail end of the season, while other contending teams are signing talented NCAA kids to help them out down the stretch and into the playoffs, the best we can get aren't even the result of anything he does (or knows). Suter came from DIII and only here because of family ties with Nashville. Conacher only because he was college teammate of Hudson.
There are plenty of quality coaches out there, either current pro assistants and in the college/junior ranks that have to be better options.
Insanity = repeating the same thing and expecting a different result. |

I have been critical of the style of play all season but some coaches win with that style and some don't. His approach actually was not that different than Chuck's last year. The difference was the offensive mix of the players. Lots of set up guys but very few, if any, finishers. Look at what happened when Conacher stopped by for a cup of coffee!! Had we had one or two players like that all year, let alone the Reading series, things would have been different. Milwaukee takes Conacher and gives us Chet. Not a good trade.
We all saw the difference in the defensive results once we got Foster. That end of ice took a long time to fix and Chet not only had a terrible year himself but you can't discount the indirect effect such a performance has on the rest of the team who become tentative and are constantly behind when they don't have the skill set to come back. We just didn't have the horses at the other end. Who were the "go to" guys who the set up guys should have been looking for?
How much of that was the front office? the coaching staff?, the late start after Chuck left?. Don't know and I guess my vote would be that these coaches deserve a year with "their team". I do hope however they play a more aggressive game at both ends of the ice--and get Foster back.
At the end, the most talented players in the ECHL are those who are signed by an AHL/NHL team and assigned here. If they don't have the talent you are screwed. Milwaukee sent us no one and Florida/Rochester roster is probably the weakest NHL/AHL combination in pro hockey. The other players fill out the roster Our leading goal scorers were all such players-- Cyclone veterans who have no AHL/NHL affiliations. |

I agree.
BUT!!!
Are you watching the Preds? I keep coming back to that because they have been proving all year that you can win in this sport with solid defense, a strong goalie and a scrappy offense. The Ducks have at least 4 guys that are stronger scorers than the strongest scorer Nashville has, yet the Preds keep beating them.
Strong coaches at every level learn to succeed with what they have, but at the AA level it is a crucial talent.
I didn't see a single road game for the 'clones this season but I'd bet the reason our road record was so much better than our home record is because we just played a basic, hard on the body, fundamental game on the road. Something this team had the capability of doing well. At home? Well, at home we are passing behind our backs, trying to saucer it over the sticks of both defensemen across the ice, and turning it over in our zone trying to create rushes. That's great if you have the personnel to pull it off. We didn't.
Actually, this year's Preds remind me a whole lot of last years 'clones. Nothing spectacular, just strong D and constant pressure and effort. A very frustrating team to play against.

We are on the same page Catch 22. I did see some away games and they played the same type game you described--back to basics. Claude Julien was asked last week why the Bruins seemed to play a better game on the road this year and he said the same thing. He said that at home his team sometimes gets carried away with playing to the crowd at both ends while on the road they play a more sound defense all over the ice and crash the net more rather than trying to make the pretty play. One thing I don't like about Skalde's system is I seldom--I mean seldom-see anyone close in front of the net or at the posts looking for a tip in, a rebound, a cross ice pass, or even screening. I didn't see Conacher play his two games but in talking to someone who did, he said that is exactly what Conacher did--go to the net and look to make something happen.

Exactly.
Watch the Preds play. The root cause of many of their goals are guys like Hornqvist, Ward and Tootoo wreaking constant havoc in front of the goalie. Thats how we needed to play this year, all year. We didn't.

Not Sure if its Skalde's system to blame under chuck we had the same issue all the time nobody infront of the net to put the rebond in.
I think Skalde did a good job this year we had a playoff team. The Clones had a ton of injurys to keyplayers that hurt us. If Pierce, Sproat and others were on the playoff roster and able to play the results whould have been different. There are other teams in the league that wish they had the year we had. Cyclones fans on this board have become so use to winning the championship sometimes i think they dont remeber all the losing. Be thankfull we have winning hockey in this city. |

Teams have tons of injuries every year, along with tons of call ups. This year was no different, except I didn't see a coach who was able to adapt to adversity. I honestly can't say I saw anything in Skalde that impressed me.
Yes, Cyclones fans are use to winning...it's expected. Yes, Cyclones fans know there will be down years, but I don't think they will accept two of them in a row, so the pressure is now somewhat on the organization. |
