CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones, proud affiliate of the NHL's Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, announced today that 16-year NHL veteran forward Andrew Cassels has been named the team's Assistant Coach for the 2011-12 season – replacing Scott Fankhouser.
Cassels, a 41-year-old Bramalea, Ontario native joins the Cyclones staff with a tremendous hockey pedigree. The 17th overall selection in the 1987 NHL draft went onto skate in more than 1000 NHL games over his decade-and-a-half career. During that span, he collectively posted 732 points (204 goals, 528 assists) and 410 penalty minutes as a member of the Montreal Canadiens, Hartford Whalers, Calgary Flames, Vancouver Canucks, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Washington Capitals. In seven of his 16 seasons at hockey’s highest level, Cassels led his team in assists.
In 1996-97, Cassels was a member of the final Hartford Whalers team before they relocated to Raleigh, North Carolina. He is also the only known player to have scored two separate goals where a puck ricocheted off of his face and into the net. His hockey prowess has taken him to the international stage, where he earned a silver medal with Team Canada in the 1996 World Championships.
The countdown to the 2011-12 season is officially underway! Secure your seats for Saturday, November 5 when the Cyclones welcome the Chicago Express to U.S. Bank Arena for the first time at 7:30pm. He could play, no doubt. Now we get to find out if he can coach.
I see no potential downside here as Fankhouser didn't seem to be adding much to the party. |
Yes, I grew up playing hockey... In Alabama. |

| I like this move. It should (hopefully) be a major upgrade on the bench. |

I like the fact we have an NHL veteran on the bench. BUT... like Donnie asked, "Can he recruit?" (I hope so...) and What about the defense? (oh, yeah)
Last year our big downfall was the lack of defensive discipline (everyone to the net!). Coach Cassels will obviously have a great overall knowledge of the game but he's not a defensive specialist.
I see this move as Skalde having a short leash. |

So are you saying that if the Cyclones begin sucking, theyll name Cassels the head coach? |

I have no idea how long the leash is, but yes. I think most of the fans (I sure did...) thought last year was a disappointment. No, we're not going to win the cup every year but having a so-so regular season and backing into the playoffs isn't going to grow/maintain the fan base.
Skalde was saddled with someone elses players, a late start, countless injuries, an inability to recruit, call ups, a subpar defensive scheme and goaltending issues... all of which were discussed on this board. This coming season is his time to shine, and honestly I hope he does. Should he fail, and attendance drops, I imagine a mid-January/February departure wouldn't be surprising.
Hiring a defensive coach would make me happy. Playing responsible defensive hockey would make me even happier. Its a long way till mid October and I am cautiously optimistic that this season will elevate Coach Skalde to a true winning coach. |

| I could not agree more. I'm not sure Skalde is on a "Short leash" but if things go like they did last year by January or so, I would not at all be surprised to see a change. I would like nothing more than to see Skalde succeed, but his past resume does not leave much room for optimism. |
...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones! |

| I'm curious if anyone knows if this was a Cyclones signing or if Cassels was hired by one of our NHL Affiliates. Maybe to groom him to move up the ladder? I'm sure that all of his NHL experince should go over well in the locker room. |
