| so can anyone figure out why we shot first during the shoot-out? it seems to me that shooting first at home is like kicking off during OT in the NFL or the home team requesting to bat first in a baseball game. i can't remember ever seeing this happen before. |

That surprised me too but I figured it was just the refs giving

| From what I have heard, they wanted to take the pressure off Dov if they would of scored first. I was shocked too when the Clones were on the ice taking the first shot. :/ |

| I was told that the home team has the option to chose to shoot first or last. I didn't ask why they chose to go first. |

since we went to a shootout again last night and i saw someone questioning the the shoot first strategy, i thought i'd bring this thread back.
while i'm still not sure i like the strategy (we have only won 1 shootout while employing it) i asked weber about it and the stats behind the strategy are sound. according to chuck the odds in a shootout are overwhelmingly in the goalies favor; something like a save percentage of around 80%. so chuck figures, by shooting first, you put the pressure on the opposing goalie and shooters if we score. the problem is, if you don't win in the first five shooters, the shootout goes to sudden death, and the pressure gets loaded on our goalie.
like i said, i'm not sure if i agree with it, but it looks like chuck stands behind it 100%. i think it makes sense when cedrics in net but when dov's back there i think we should shoot second. |

I agree with shooting second with Dov in goal,but I still want to shoot
second even with Cedrick in goal.Either way, what killed us last night in
the shootout was going straight at the goalie down the middle.I prefer off
to one side and the shot at least 10 feet from the net with the goalie still
heading backwards. |

| No Dannielle, that was one of the stronger points. He played well in the shoot out, especially compares to his first time against Dayton. What killed us was not being able to capitilize on the MANY Power Play oppurtunies, letting them take complete control the whole third period, and our shoots in the Shoot Out making no move and shooting right into Petresiak's chest. |

that game never should have gone to a shootout. in the last 20 seconds of the 2nd period alone we had 3 or chances to put loose pucks in the net. but either put them wide, or got reading beat us to them. ftorek had two shots at open nets and put both of them wide. urquhart continues to try and split the defense when he has players open for a pass....i could go on and on.
but once it did get to a shoot-out, dov, as great as he plays during the game is a position based goalie and shoot-out or breakaway situations are not his forte. of the five shots he faced he only actually stopped 1. 2 went in and the 2 others had him beat and had open net to shoot at but the reading player either put the puck wide, or into the post.

| Dayton did the same thing in Troy, taking the first shot in the shootout. So Weber's not the only coach doing it. |

I am with you. I really dislike taking the first shot. It doesnt allow the home team a chance to answer a bad goal. I understand the notion of pressure, but if the visiting teams goalie has the pressure of knowing one goal wins, with the crowd noise and fans yelling, that seems to be the way to go.
As a fan, I dont like the shootout at all, but if we have to have it, let our final winning goal be the roaring sound that ends the game and sends the crowd home pumped, not a gasp of relief if our goalie makes the winning save, or the groan if he doesnt. |

| Guess this is a trend, even the NHL doing it. I know it might be little different only having 3 shooters but the home team Boston took the first shootout tonight. |

It isn't a matter of "more pressure vs. less pressure". It's a matter of who the pressure is on, your shooter or your goalie.
Shooting first takes the pressure of "oh man, I gotta score" off of your shooter. The goalies *always* give themselves the "oh man, I gotta make the save" speech, even during regulation.
I contend there's less pressure on your team if you shoot first in the overtime.
I totally agree with raptorov about not liking the idea of shootouts, too. To me, it's like doing a "home run derby" for a baseball game that is tied after 9 innings, or a field-goal kicking contest for a tie football game. |
