CINCINNATI, Ohio – Garrett Suter’s power play goal with just 27 seconds to play in regulation gave the Cincinnati Cyclones (2-4-0-2) a thrilling 3-2 victory over the Trenton Titans (4-8-0-0) in front of 3,667 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night.

Cincinnati jumped out 1-0 at the 13:43 mark of period one when Mathieu Aubin tipped an Evan Trupp shot past Titans goalie Dave Caruso (L, 30 saves, 3-4-0-0). However, just a few minutes later Adam Presizniuk batted home his second goal of the season past Cyclones net minder Tyler Plante (W, 24 saves, 1-1-0-2) for the game-tying goal at 16:06.

Trenton pulled ahead with 13:15 gone in the middle frame as Dustin Cameron received a pass from Randy Rowe and lifted home the go-ahead goal on the power play. Despite some late chances by the Cyclones, the visiting Titans carried the 2-1 lead heading into the second intermission.

Cincinnati came to life midway through the third period. Joel Champagne picked up his second goal in as many nights at the 13:19 mark to knot the score at two heading into the final minutes. Then, at 18:06, Mitch Versteeg was whistled for a slashing call – giving the Cyclones a power play for the remainder of regulation. With just 27 seconds left to play in regulation, Garrett Suter stepped into a blast just outside the left circle that beat Caruso through a screen to give Cincinnati a 3-2 lead. They would hold on to win it by the same score.

“Garrett has been frustrated with his lack of playing time over the last few weeks,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. It’s gratifying to see a player prove that he belongs in the lineup by scoring a big goal like that. He is a good player and is going to continue contributing for us. To cap of the game the way he did, I’m very happy for Garrett.”

The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows:

First Star: Garrett Suter (Game-Winning Goal for Cincinnati)
Second Star: Joel Champagne (1 goal, 1 assist for Cincinnati)
Third Star: Mathieu Aubin (1 goal for Cincinnati)

The Cyclones will be back on the ice at U.S. Bank Arena this Tuesday morning as they host Toledo for the 2011 Education in Hockey Day presented by Ohio Lottery. Still some breakdowns on D leading to some freebies for the bad guys, but better than last weekend.

Hopefully the player revolving door will settle a little (it'll never stop) and these guys can put together a run to get back in the hunt. The talent looks to be there.

The offensive scheme I saw in the last 30 minutes last night was what I hadn't seen before from a Skalde team. The lines came back to get the puck allowing them to carry the puck out and generate north to south speed through the neutral zone and to carry the puck over the blue line between the dots rather than along the board. Once he took the shackles off you could see the talent come through. Not only did it make for a much more effective and entertaining offense but the pressure it generated helped keep the Titans out of our zone and the shots down. Only one even strength goal again but Caruso stood on his head especially in the third period. The speed, movement without the puck, and passing skills were all so much better than anything I saw last year. Only hope they continue to play like that.

I agree that Caruso kept that one closer than it should have been. He had a really good game in taking the loss.
