“After speaking with Matt, he has decided that it would be his best professional interest to pursue more consistent playing time in a non-developmental league,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. “With our roster filled mainly with our affiliated players, he wasn’t seeing the ice as much as he would have liked to. Matt is a good teammate and an even better person who has made a significant contribution to the organization in the past. We wish him the best of luck in the future.”

Matt had a great rookie campaign with the 'Clones and had a load of potential. However, ever since that 09-10 season he's had issues with staying healthy. His potential will be missed.
This sounds like he might be making a move to the CHL. Since the CHL considers itself a AA hockey league like the ECHL, players have to be released from their ECHL contracts in order to sign in the CHL. We saw this happen earlier this season when Neil Trimm was released.
The CHL is still developmental but it's for the most part unaffiliated which allows free agent players to get a lot of ice time. If this is where he ends up Pierce should be a top tier player if he can stay healthy.
Based on the trade for futures that sent Ryan Blair to Toledo, I would assume that some sort of trade would have been made to send him to another ECHL team had he or another team been interested.
A move to Europe would have probably just had him get suspended by the Team.
I'll have a few more thoughts on this in tomorrows CycWords update.

| That makes sense. Bakersfield on the current roster has only two returnees from 10-11. They are not affiliated with an NHL club so Pierce will see more playing time and some familiar faces with CPZ, Benson and McKenzie. A really good fit IMO. |
