I have to admit I am not well-traveled. The best I have is the occasional chat with a ref or media guy, or occasionally an opposing player. I virtually never initiate conversation - just stick to my role. But occasionally when the visitors are there early with time to kill, a player will be chatty.
Of course I ask about the ice. Of course they are polite and never say "it stinks" or anything. But generally they say our ice is among the best in the league. When we beat South Carolina in 2008, they loved our ice compared to theirs, on the ocean, in May and June. That's sort of obvious, though. I know the ice guys down there work very hard to keep it.
About the only time we get real complaints are when we paint the ice like for Pink In the Rink. They think the paint itself is slowing them down. That's not accurate. The paint color is sealed between about a half-inch of clear water.
That half-inch is the problem, though. The added depth means the surface is further away from the surface and pipes, and insulated by that much more ice. That makes the top skating surface softer ice material, and therefore slower to skate on.
They hate that.
