I just wanted to raise the question... I think that despite the low totals, we are doing OK. But there are people that might disagree. Now, the question is in your opinion should Jarrod Skalde pay for the rough start with his job as our coach?

Again, not an opinion... just wanted to raise an interesting topic

I would give him a "C" grade for the season so far and would give him
another 30 days. My dislikes were first the handling of Plante in
regards to the strain he put on Chet. Second, I don't like the lack of
moves to bring in some defensive help. As for the positive, I do see a
team that does seem to be hustling and mental break downs seem to be
fewer and farther between. Lack of early home games really hurt us so
let's see how the team handles more home ice.

Fun topic, but really not relevant at this point. With that being said:

I am not a Skalde fan overall, however, you go ahead and ride the season out with him, regardless of the outcome. Cassels may have NHL experience, but no coaching experience so to speak, so I don't have the confidence he can make the necessary transactions when we get in to roster issues from call ups.

If Skalde does not produce a significant improvement by season end, he does not get his contract renewed and everyone moves on with a fresh start. The one thing this ownership has shown is they are willing to do what it takes to win, so I don't think landing a good, quality coach will be an issue this time, especially with an entire off season to work with.

Just my humbled opinion...

...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones!

The Cyclones in the past have been slow starters. It always seems like when January comes along, our team does better. With Weber that was certainly true, and I guess with Skalde last year even though Foster and callups from opponents basically helped us back into the playoffs, it was true...kind of.

I am not a Skalde fan, but based on past history; I am willing to give him until the halfway point of the season to get the team solidly into playoff contention.

Personally, if the decision is to get rid of Skalde, I would rather it happen at the halfway point so that: A.) We can see how the new coach works out and B.) If the new coach does work out, give him the summer to put next year's team together.

I so far agree with all three of you in your own ways... If you give Skalde the balance of the season and then part ways with him, it avoids the change in the system that sometimes leads to disaster.
However, I do believe that if a change were to be made, the mid point would be the perfect time... Andrew Cassels would be the proper pick under this scenario, and so far he looks to me like head coach material, and Cincinnati would be a good proving ground. Also in this scenario Andrew and Jarrod have set up a system that so far has given them a .500 record, and by changing to a new coach with different ideas, you are playing Russian Roulette with the way it would work. I refer you to the case of Paul Lawless. Winter of 2001-02 he took over for Ray Edwards, and luckily his system put us in the playoffs, and then he left and Malcolm Cameron was able to spend an entire year under his plan. The 2003 team, with Malcolm in full season, made it to Game 7 of the Conference Finals. In 2002, we were able to bounce back from a rough go to make the playoffs, but it spells disaster if your unprepared.

I do give credit on the grounds that we have played the fewest games. We historically do well when games are bunched up the way the ECHL does. I hate the way they have week-long gaps, and the only way to be successful is if you are playing games on a constant basis without a large gap. Once the brunt of the games gets going, we should be OK.

However, based on what I have seen and read, I will be surprised if Jarrod Skalde remains our coach into next year. His over-emphasis on offense is appalling and his only-hope treatment of Chet is going to cause Chet to quit. I have seen it happen. Give Chet a day off once in awhile, would ya, Jarrod?

It seems very premature to be bringing up this topic. Currently, the Cyclones are playing at about a .500 clip, which isn't terrible at this juncture. As it's been mentioned, the strange schedule has certainly not been helpful. The team has had week-long breaks from playing at game speed. Also, the lack of total games, as well as the lack of home games, doesn't really give us a large enough sample size. Once the Cyclones get on equal footing with games played, we'll have a better idea how they stack up within the conference. Thus far, they appear to have equivalent talent to most of the teams.

The one thing that gives me consternation is constantly playing shorthanded due to call-ups and injuries. It seems like the club could handle that a little better.

I'm not sure Skalde is to blame for the Plante situation. It sounded like he just didn't want to be here and quit on the team.

Some more defensive strength in their own zone would be a big help too.

Separately, can someone teach Vaive to use his size? He's always the biggest man on the ice, yet plays like a little man.

.500 when he got here.

.500 last year.

.500 now.

Looks sort of like a trend to me. Of course, we could do worse.

Never having been a head coach, general manager, or an affiliate GM/Coach, I have no expertise as to how to judge his performance. I am also not privy as to what goes on in the locker room so I cant comment on his ability to teach or lead. What I do see on the ice as a fan however is a team that skates and works hard, has learned to make a quick transition, is fifth in the league in the most shots per game and third in the league in the fewest shots allowed per game. The major issue I believe is that the team has scored over three goals in regulation only five times in 19 games (4-1 in those games) and you can't win consistently in this league with that stat. The shots per game are there but the goals are not. Is this his fault? a lack of finishers? a statistical blip that will correct itself? I hope it is the latter. Doubt they would let Skalde go mid year for two business reasons: they would still need to pay him as well as new coach and not sure where you find a better coach at the ECHL level mid year.

Finishers just get called up to one of our AHL clubs...a la Cory Conacher, when they start to 'over'-produce.

It would seem to me that Skalde is trying to run a system designed for the CHL, where you have more contracted players, and can sign some finishers who are older, and didn't make it in the AHL...but he's trying to do it in the ECHL, where the talent isn't there consistently.

I'm predicting a 6th place finish in the East...so in the playoffs - but nothing to write home about.

I hope I'm wrong, and we do better...but I'm not sure if we have the talent to do what Skalde appears to want to do.

You typically see lower shooting percentage when a team takes a lot of shots from the point. Some of the highest scoring NHL Dmen of all time only had percentages around 10%. "Sniper" forwards tend to be closer to 20%.

While it's true that you can't score if you don't shoot, where you shoot from does matter.

And as noted... "Finishers" often aren't around long in the ECHL.
