CINCINNATI, Ohio – Goaltender Brian Foster only needed to turn aside 17 shots as he led the Cincinnati Cyclones (9-9-0-3) to a 3-0 shutout of the Chicago Express (14-9-2-1) in front of 4,571 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night. It was Foster’s third-career professional blanking.
Cincinnati scored the game’s first goal at the 8:53 mark as Garrett Wilson tipped home a Jeremy Klaver point blast to give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead. Thanks to some stingy team defense, Jarrod Skalde’s team carried the one-goal edge into the first intermission after limiting the Express to just five shots on net in the opening frame.
Chris Cahill buried his fourth goal of the season at the 14:19 after a tape-to-tape pass from Mike Liambas, to extend Cincinnati’s lead to 2-0 at the second intermission. The Cyclones continued to limit Chicago’s opportunities in the middle stanza, holding them to just two shots in the entire period. It was the second-fewest shots that Cincinnati has allowed in a single frame all season long.
Chicago ramped up its scoring chances in the third period, throwing 10 shots on Cyclones goalie Brian Foster (W, 17 saves, 3-1-0). However, the second-year net minder was equal to the task, preserving a 17-save shutout. David Leaderer buried an empty netter with five seconds to go, capping off the Cyclones 3-0 win.
“I thought after what happened last night, I was very proud of the way the guys competed tonight,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. “We really clogged up the front of the net, our defense closed gaps and got in shooting lanes. It was a great effort by everybody.”
The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows:
First Star: Brian Foster (17 save shutout, winning goaltender) Second Star: Garrett Wilson (1 goal for Cincinnati) Third Star: Chris Cahill (1 goal for Cincinnati)
The Cyclones will return U.S. Bank Arena next Wednesday night, December 21 when they host the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:30pm. It will be another Wet Wednesday with $1 PBR and Miller High Life flowing all night long! Secure your seats now by calling 513.421.PUCK or log on to CyclonesHockey.com. http://echl.com/stats/game-summary.php?game_id=9042 1. Good crowd : 4571 2. Great game 3. Great Xmas promotion item : Very nice snowglobe
Only negative was Liambas taking the bait and getting the slashing penalty with one minute left. I know it was a ticky penalty compared to the non-calls but Mike needs to stop letting everyone in the rink know when retaliation is about to be served. That was a time to "suck it up" and take one for the team. By the way, when did he get an "A" ? Yes he is doing a much better job since playing defense but the "A" puts him more in contact with the referees. Let's see if he can "grow up" and earn this honor. |

Methinks you are reading that wrong.
#25 for Chicago (can't remember his name) was trying to start stuff with various 'clones throughout the entire game EXCEPT Liambas. With about 8 minutes left in the 3rd he started hacking at Luciani before a faceoff and Mike was up on the bench just freakin' glaring at the dude. With Maury called up we were playing with 4 d-men plus Mike (AGAIN) and he kept it under control the entire game because the team couldn't lose him for 5.
But with less than minute left and up by two he went after 25 will clear ill will, and the ref laid a complete weaksauce call on him, especially given the situation and the fact that he'd called NOTHING all night. That's why Mike went ballistic and I don't blame him.
In my opinion what he did was exactly what he should have done. Kept his cool for 59 minutes, and then went to send a message for the future. He's our enforcer, he's wearing the A (which is rare in itself), AND he's continually playing as a reserve Dman on a short blue line. That's a crazy situation and he's doing about the best job you can expect of him.
As for Foster getting the first star... Sure, he got the shutout but that was a pretty easy night for him. Chicago had nothing going for most of that game and he was probably getting a little bored. I've seen him have much better games and give up two. The first star was truly Leaderer. I have no clue how many minutes he played but he seemed like he was never not on the ice. Nice empty netter to put it away too. JMO.

I can understand the desire to "stand up" for your fellow players but does anyone feel comfortable with a minute left in the game, down a man with their goalie pulled with a 2 point lead? I saw Luciani laugh in his face and not take the bait. We need every point in games between division rivals. That was not a time to fight or give the ref an excuse to call a penalty. |

| Foster being named first star of a game in which he wasn't really tested shows why there isn't any credibility given to the 3-stars of the game selection in most minor pro arenas. There are players that did nothing for 65 minutes but score the deciding goal in the shootout and get named first star. Then you have players that win key faceoffs, help his team kill opposition power plays all night and in key times of the game, and win all of their battles for the puck but aren't selected as one of the 3-stars because they didn't have any points. |

I can agree too much emphasis is put on scoring for the "stars of the game" but any time a goalie pitches a shutout, only a "hat-trick" would beat that in my book. I've seen way to many goalies lose focus and give up an easy goal.4-0 shutouts allow the goalies to take some chances but 2-0 (won't count the late EN)meant Foster couldn't afford any mistake. Hat's off to the defense and some really nice passing. |

There are games where goalies give up three or four goals and played better than in games in which they recorded a shutout. |

^Yep.
That was an eaaasy game for Foster. He was constantly skating and stretching during stoppages just to stay warm. Leaderer worked his butt off and didn't even make one of the 3. So I can't say I agree with that process at all.

| I'm fine with it. 17 shots, 17 saves. That kind of success deserves a tip of the cap. |

Just for clarification, I'm not suggesting Foster didn't have a good game. He did. But he wasn't one of the top 3 performers on the ice.
Problem with that whole thing is that a goalie pretty much HAS to get a shutout to get a 1st star when they can have the game of their career and give up one or two (and even lose). And can sometimes get a shutout simply because the opposition can't hit the net and can't get any pressure established.
Just sayin.
