CINCINNATI, Ohio – A.J. Jenks scored twice while Justin Vaive and Anthony Luciani each added a pair of assists as the Cincinnati Cyclones (10-9-0-3) cruised past the Kalamazoo Wings (16-9-0-2) by a 5-1 final score in front of 3,366 at U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday night.

In another tremendous defensive effort for the Cyclones, Maury Edwards found the lone goal at 7:44 as he blasted a point shot past Wings goalie Maxime Clermont (L, 41 saves, 4-3-0) to give Cincinnati a 1-0 lead. Jarrod Skalde’s team held Kalamazoo to just three shots on net and took the one goal edge into the first intermission.

The Wings found the equalizer at 12:45 of the second period when Matt Whitehead batted a loose puck in mid-air past Cyclones goaltender Brian Foster (W, 13 saves, 4-1-0), knotting the score at one. However, A.J. Jenks followed with a pair of goals in the final nine minutes of the frame to push Cincinnati back ahead 3-1 after 40 minutes of play.

Cincinnati’s offense continued to buzz in the third period as Rob Slaney and Garrett Wilson each tallied at 14:00 and 15:45 respectively to seal a Cyclones 5-1 victory. They also tied their highest shot output of the season, with 46 sent on Kalamazoo’s net. Ironically, the only other time it happened this season was on October 29 against Kalamazoo.

“Knowing that Kalamazoo had a depleted lineup, we wanted to get out to an early lead and we accomplished that,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. “We didn’t want them to hang around and we did a good job keeping the pressure on throughout. It was nice to see A.J. Jenks getting rewarded for a lot of hard work tonight as well.”

The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows:

First Star: A.J. Jenks (2 goals for Cincinnati)
Second Star: Anthony Luciani (2 assists for Cincinnati)
Third Star: Justin Vaive (2 assists for Cincinnati)

The Cyclones will be back on the ice at U.S. Bank Arena TOMORROW night as they welcome the Chicago Express to Downtown Cincinnati. It will be the first of four Thirsty Thursday’s with $1 PBR and Miller High Life flowing all night long! In addition, it will also be Ugly Sweater Night where fans are encouraged to wear their most unpleasant holiday garb! Secure your seats now by calling 513.421.PUCK or log on to CyclonesHockey.com. Its the second time they have got over .500, they were 8-7-0-3 a couple weeks ago. Great game by Foster stopping the shots and the boys for another good D holding the shots to a low number. Makes for better chances of winning. Even though Kzoo was depleted a win is a win.

Not to rain on everyone's parade but the "great defense" isn't really defense. The great defensive numbers is a result of offensive zone puck control and forechecking which aren't necessarily defense. When teams are patient enough to get into the Cyclones end they usually create some pretty good chances. The Boys have tightened things up lately and I will give credit where credit is due and last night was a solid defensive zone effort.

That being said, if the the puck possession and forecheck keep things up the way they are, scoring should continue on an upward trend and average defensive zone play should get the job done.

Elvis--not to get picky but I was always taught that the best defense starts in the offensive zone with strong forechecking and puck control. What also impressed me last night was the stick work or this group. They seemed to win most battles and poke checked all over the ice. Their passing is sooooooo much better this year than last. They seem to be able to hit men in stride and not just put the puck "in the vicinity" and this year's team can actually receive a pass cleanly. They also seem to be playing more of a layered defense in their own zone and transitioning out quickly. Second in the league in fewest shots allowed per game is a stat I will take and run with all year.

Correct me if I'm worng, but weren't those things you've mentioned - aggressive forchecking, winning puck battles along the boards, etc. - all characteristics of Cassell's playing career? Sounds like he's a better assistant than that joke last year...

@Fangers - I agree, Cassels brings much more to the table than Fankhouser. And yes, all of the good things the team is doing, ie the puck possession, the forecheck etc need to keep going but if they don't tighten up play in their own end they will continue as they are. Last nights game with Chicago illustrated my point. The first 10 mins the 'Clones controlled the game with possession and forecheck, then Chicago realized they weren't going to skate through it and started to dump and chase. The result was Chicago creating more offensive pressure and a lot of good chances and finding the back of then net. Had Foster not picked his game up and made a brilliant right pad save in the 3rd I'm not sure the Cyclones get a regulation win.
