Interested if anyone here knows anything about Kalamazoo and why they draw so poorly? Looking at attendance numbers they have the fourth lowest average at about 2600 per game down from about 3200 last year (even Wheeling and Trenton are up). Michigan is a hotbed for hockey but far enough away from Detroit so not to compete, nice arena conveniently located right off the interstate, they are first in the Division, and made the Finals last year. Perhaps it is competition from Western Michigan hockey? Cyclones have done a great job at increasing attendance but Chicago is sucking gas and Wheeling is suffering again. Only Toledo in the Midwest is solid and we need a core of good drawing teams in the region to provide a good geographic division. |

My understanding is that they raise ticket prices this year. They also have to pay for parking too. That might be the reason that they are not getting fans in the arena. |

The arena is a little bit out in the boonies on the southwest side of town, which makes it a little harder for Western students to get to games. When I was there in 30 years ago, the Broncos regularly drew a crowd while there was hardly anyone at the Wings games even though they were in a AAA hockey league.

Kalamazoo is not very big and with the WMU Broncos there, they face stiff competition. Also, Grand Rapids isn't too far away, so the allure of the AHL may play a part, too. Kalamazoo is a nice city. It would be too bad to lose them at any point. |
