CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones (16-13-0-5) enjoyed a three-goal first period and never looked back as they rolled past the Chicago Express (17-16-4-2) by a 4-1 final score in front of 5,755 at U.S. Bank Arena.
For just the fifth time this season, the Cyclones scored the game’s first three goals. Mike Pelech opened the scoring at the 5:44 mark by backhanding a shot over the shoulder of Chicago goaltender Peter Mannino (L, 25 saves, 1-2-0-1), making it 1-0. Matt Sisca followed with his third goal in two games at 8:33 by tipping a Maury Edwards point shot. David Leaderer extended the Cincinnati cushion to 3-0 just before the break, at 17:45, as he sent a low wrist shot past Mannino for his fourth lamp-lighter of the season. After 20 minutes, Cincinnati enjoyed a 3-0 lead.
Despite four power plays for each team in the middle frame, the Cyclones remained ahead 3-0 after two periods thanks to some solid penalty killing and 15 saves by Cyclones netminder Chet Pickard (W, 27 saves, 7-9-0-1).
In the third period, the Express spoiled Pickard’s shutout hopes when Kyle Ostrow tipped Josh Burrows’ shot into the net, making it 3-1 Cincinnati. However, the Cyclones pulled back ahead by three as Taylor Aronson blasted in his first professional goal on the powerplay at the 12:34 mark, giving Cincinnati a 4-1 cushion. They held on to win by the same score.
The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows:
First Star: Mike Pelech (1 goal, 1 assist for Cincinnati) Second Star: Chet Pickard (27 saves, winning goaltender) Third Star: David Leaderer (1 goal, 1 assist for Cincinnati)
Cincinnati will now embark on a four-game road trip beginning with another battle against the Express at Sears Centre on Wednesday night at 8:00pm ET. Fans can watch the game LIVE at the final PBR Party Express Viewing Party at Dave and Busters! Pregame coverage will begin on the Cyclones Radio Network (1050-AM, America One) beginning at 7:45pm ET.
The Cyclones will return to U.S. Bank Arena on Wednesday, February 1 as they welcome in the Toledo Walleye at 7:30pm. It will be another Wet Wednesday, where fans 21 and up can enjoy $1 PBR and Miller High Life! In addition, there will be another “Pucks N Pinot” pregame wine tasting event available for purchase. Friday and Saturday is a prime gripe of mine over Coach Skalde hockey. Chicago played horrible both nights, but all we wanted to do was play bully on Friday. We should have swept those two games but instead split. Next week in Chicago we need to suck it up and play hockey. This team can skate with most everyone and the defense can hold their own WHEN THEY DECIDE TO PLAY ! Maybe we should set the right mood on Wednesday by giving Liambis the night off and not give the refs the easy target. The three games in Chicago we need to come away with at least 4 points. Target also needs to be regulation wins meaning NO POINTS for Chicago that game. Were 3 points behind Chicago for the 8th playoff spot and still in 10th place. Now is not the time to play "toughest kid" but instead let's play "best kid" in the house. |

OK Bags, give Liambas the night off. Who in the Cyclones line up is capable of keeping Chaz Johnson, Devin DiDiomete and the rest of Martinson's thugs in check. I'm not saying that we should goon it up with them by any means. The Cyclones need to concentrate on playing their game but without a physical element on the ice it gives Chicago way to many opportunities to get cheap. I'm sorry but I don't want to rely on a suspect ECHL ref to control the game. Like him or not,he sticks up for his teammates. I don't know if you noticed but, last night, when Chaz Johnson rocked Reed with a clean open ice hit, Liambas didn't chase Johnson down, he played his position and when the play came to an end he went to have a chat with Johnson. Johnson didn't really want to much to do with it until the linesmen came in. It was only then that Chaz started running his mouth.
When push comes to shove Liambas IS the physical presence on this team and I'd rather it be him fighting and sitting for 5 than one of the skilled guys on the team. |

If the only way this team can survive is Liambas playing "big brother", this season is lost. When he was suspended we managed to win and what I am saying is let Chicago goon it up without him on the ice and the league will come down on them. Yes it was great to see the team play under control last night-under control Saturday=win, not under control Friday=loss. |

| Disagree about Friday. The Cyclones looked sluggish and Chet gave up a couple of softies. Had Liambas not been in the lineup, Chicago would have taken advantage of the Cyclones. Somebody needed to keep Devin Didi in check. He's a punk and was running his mouth and looking for fights all night. Finally, he got tossed. Liambas isn't the greatest enforcer, but he gives no quarter. |

Ideally, in dealing with teams like Chicago, we'd have a 6'4 230lb goon as a 10th forward that only plays a few minutes a game and keeps the thug squad in check by simply being on the bench.
But, we don't have that. We have Mike, and Mike does a good job. He does draw some calls he doesn't deserve due to all of the calls he totally deserves, but thats the way it goes.

The biggest problem I have w/ Liambas is the untimely hits that don't connect with being an enforcer. When someone can't resist the blind side hit on a skater just because he can, that's what gets me. Driving a skater into the glass from behind is both dangerous and not needed. The big hit is a hit with the fans, but not with the refs or the other team's enforcer. Early in our win streak, Mike was playing solid hockey as he was learning the position of defenseman. Did he make mistakes-yes- but these were honest mistakes and we were playing good. I keep going back to the closing moments of the Chicago game and his suckered in penalty. The next game he went out and got suspended. Saturday he played better but he needs to learn when to check and when to REALLY check. That is the sign of a good enforcer. A goon is someone who is always out to punish someone. An enforcer is someone who only dishes out when it is needed to regain respect for his team. |

| I wish Vaive would step up as a more physical presence. Rarely is he not the biggest man on the ice. If he could just learn to assert himself when necessary, a lot of situations could be avoided and he could probably even intimidate many opponents. |

| Vaive could easily step up to be that presense, the only problem with that is if/when he drops the gloves, it takes a talented forward away from us. He has had a couple fights and done well. I thought the same of Syro, he rarely used his size to intimidate and keep people in check. |

| When it get's uploaded go listen to the Coach's Show from 1/23. Skalde had some interesting comments on Liambas. It even goes beyond The 'Bus. When the team was winning consistently through December every line worked hard and played as a 5 man units. When the "AHL" guys came back it seemed more like a team of individuals, all with their own agenda. That kind of play doesn't win too many hockey games and that's what we saw Friday night. Skalde called out Liambas in the team meeting for playing selfishly, outside of the teams objectives. The message not only sank in for Mike who played a great game but with everyone else. |

| Anyone know what happened Saturday, during pre-game, that cause Didi and Liambas to get suspended? We had a CAHL game, and missed the cyclones game. |

Edit to add:
Wait a sec...

Wasn't DiDiomete suspended for the game? If so, what the hell was he even doing on the ice? |

| This happened Friday. DiDiomete was suspended for Saturday's game. I think the League just screwed up the dates |

You sure this isn't a new suspension (3 more games)for DiDiomete and one for Liambas. The original suspension was for the bench incident a minute left in the game. That was served on Saturday. |

| Yes, these are new suspensions. DiDiomete served his 1 game on Saturday. The League reviewed the tape of warmups from Friday night (at Skalde's request perhaps after DiDiomete tripped Pickard) and then sent down additional suspensions. |
