Some say Mike is needed as an "ENFORCER" , but I find it interesting that the Cyclones have won 3 straight without him (and his penalties) on the game roster |

I'm not a fan of Mike "The Goon" or Mike "The Over Aggressive Enforcer", but I can handle the Mike "The Hockey Playing Enforcer" we saw earlier in the year. We saw Justin Johnson and Hans Benson gives us quality play when they played good tough hockey. Both cost us a few extra penalties but as long as they played under control, the refs later backed off. Mike is still a lightning rod to the refs and his mouth on the bench is growing old. That part I blame on Coach Skalde. I'm seeing way too much trash talking to the point refs are growing tired. Let's regain control of this team and play hockey like we saw against a good South Carolina squad. |

Who is South Carolina's "enforcer" or "agitator?"
<crickets>
Exactly.
And in case you weren't paying attention the Cyclones spent a whole lot of time killing penalties the last couple of nights without Liambas on the bench. It's easy to blame him for everything. It's also wrong.

Mike Hamilton for SC dirtied the ice with Joe Devin. (Note to staff: if you are using a bio-hazard bag you probably should be wearing gloves). Would Hamilton have gone after us with Liambas around? Probably. (Glad to see Devin come back in the game, BTW)
Former Cyclone Greg Stewart and Hamilton are probably the grit on SC by committee. Its always a bonus if your enforcer can contribute on other levels (Liambas as a defenseman comes to mind). The key would be you have to be available when it comes time to answer the bell. |

Not quite sure how you can blame our South Carolina penalties on NOT having Liambas ? The secret as I see it is no stupid penalties in close games. Maybe we took a little more abuse these last two nights, but I failed to see anyone really roughed up out there. We played under control, came away with 4 points and how many did South Carolina get- a big fat ZERO ! |

You sort of missed my point.
SC isn't a ruffian team. They have a couple of gritty guys but thats about it. Against a team like that you don't really need a "goon" on your bench. But lets be honest, the Cyclones took 4 points from a really good team but they pretty much stayed on the short end of the rough stuff while also spending more time in the box than SC.
You can't do that long term with success in the minor leagues because MOST teams do have at least one guy that is trying to fight his way through the ranks. SC just doesn't happen to be one of them. Trust me, you do not want to play back to back games against Chicago without Mike (or Hans or Justin) on the bench. Our boys WILL get the short end of that and it won't be fun to watch.
Oh, and I saw quite a few stupid penalties the last couple of games. Weren't we killing a penalty late in the 3rd period of a 1 goal game last night? We were. Right? Be honest, if Liambas had been in the box for that you'd be calling for his head right now. But because it was someone else you fail to even mention it. Your bias is showing. Just sayin'.

My point exactly,Mike would surely have added to the penalty situation, where it was difficult enough to kill off penalties from others JUST SAYIN |

It's no secret I'm not a fan of Mike when he is playing his over aggressive game. That said, I have also tried to point out that in many games he has played under control and was a huge asset to us. Saturday night's game was not a good night for us and the referees. Many of their hits were not called while ours were all called. To the team's credit, we didn't fall apart but instead kept playing sound hockey. Upcoming Toledo game will be a real test. Stay under control and turn the other cheek on mild hits and we should be able to win. Play goon hockey any my guess is we lose. |

We can agree on that.
My point was that some of you guys are quick draws when it comes to blaming Mike for going to the box at bad times, but say NOTHING (like in the case of Saturday) when someone else does it.
While I agree that Sullivan called a terrible game, I also saw multiple stupid Cyclones penalties. The last one especially.
All I'm saying is if you are going to hold one player to a certain standard you need to hold all of them to that standard. Mike plays Mike's game, and he's here (and wearing an A) because THE COACH likes his game and thinks there is a place for it on his team. And if I'm honest, I'd rather see Mike go to the box for jacking somebody up than someone else go to the box for taking a lazy tripping penalty 4 feet in front of the ref.

Okay one last comment on your last point. If your okay with seeing him go to the penalty box over "jacking someone up", are you then willing to have their enforcer return the hit against one of our scorers? You won't see retaliation for a stupid trip but you will for the major boarding when the player's back is to the ice. Too many times Mike's "big hits" cause the opposing coach to send the goon squad out. No "big hit"- no need for retaliation ! |

That works both ways.
Some level of gooniness has always been a part of minor league hockey and until fighting is outlawed it always will be. Therefore in most games it's a pretty good idea to have your own goon. This past weekend simply weren't those such games, but I argue that those games are the exception in the ECHL, not the norm. |
