CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones (22-18-1-7) rallied from a 4-1 third period deficit to force overtime but ultimately fell in a shootout to the Kalamazoo Wings (29-16-2-3) by a 5-4 final score in front of 4,262 at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday night.

The Wings jumped ahead 1-0 at 6:38 as Dustin Cloutier caught a pass from Darren Archibald in the Cincinnati slot and lit the lamp, making it 1-0. Then, with just over 30 seconds to play in the period, Brian Haczyk camped out in front of the Cyclones net and directed a shot past Chet Pickard (SOL, 28 saves, 9-10-0-2) for a 2-0 Kalamazoo lead at the first intermission.

Right out of the gate in the second period, Kalamazoo added to their lead as Darryl Bootland deflected Taylor Ellington’s point shot into the net at the 0:18 mark to give the Wings a 3-1 lead. The Cyclones stopped the bleeding at 12:25 when Dan Eves followed up his own shot and lifted a rebound past Wings goaltender Maxime Clermont (W, 32 saves, 9-7-1), making it a 3-1 game after 40 minutes.

Things looked bleak early in the third period as, just 1:30 into the frame, Kory Karlander sent a high wrist shot over the glove of Pickard and in for a 4-1 Wings cushion. However, Cincinnati began to chip away at the lead; at 7:17, Jeremy Klaver poked a puck just over the goal line and into the net, making it 4-2. The offense slowed down for a bit before Cincinnati got the first of two power plays at 17:18, as Bootland was whistled for interference. While on the power play, Pelech caught a pass from the corner and blasted in his 12th goal of the season to pull the Cyclones within one. Then, on another Bootland penalty, the Cincinnati man-advantage unit cashed in again; as Pelech took a shot from the left circle, the rebound deflected right to Justin Vaive and tied the score at four with 1:30 to go in regulation.

Neither team could find the game-winner in the final minutes or in overtime, so the game was to be decided in a shootout. The first two shooters for Kalamazoo, Justin Taylor and Taylor Ellington, lit the lamp while Eves and Anthony Luciani were both denied. In round four, Matt Sisca potted a goal to keep Cincinnati alive but Karlander followed in the fifth round and sealed the 5-4 Wings win with a goal of his own.

The Cyclones Radio Network Three Stars of the Game are as follows:

First Star: Kory Karlander (Game-ending goal in the Shootout for Kalamazoo)
Second Star: Mike Pelech (1 goal, 3 points for Cincinnati)
Third Star: Justin Vaive (1 goal for Cincinnati)

Cincinnati will now hit the road for a Saturday night visit against the Chicago Express at 8:30pm ET. Fans can hear all the action of the tilt on the Cyclones Radio Network (1050-AM, America One) starting at 8:15pm ET.

The Cyclones will be back at U.S. Bank Arena this Monday, February 20, as they play host to the Gwinnett Gladiators at 2:00pm. It’s also the Cyclones Kids Club Matinee Game, where members of the club will receive a FREE ticket.

...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones!

Lucky to even make it to OT. Score could have been easily 8-4 Kzoo with the amount of post ringing behind Chet. Absolutely awful in the shootout! Kzoo had not even gotten to their best players and could have had their equipment manager as a shooter and the results would have been the same against a goalie who couldn't stop a medicine ball!

Cyclone Shootout = Automatic Loss

I really hope their playoff hopes don't come down to a shootout or it will be an early summer for the boys.

1st Kzoo goal - Edwards gets undressed coming down the right side. Puck is crisply passed across to the bottom of the left face off circle where it's one-timed for the goal by a player who had streaked by a stationary Liambas. Fault - Cyclones defense

2nd Kzoo goal - Almost a carbon copy of the 1st but with different players. Aronson (I believe) doesn't clear the zone, nor does he get back into play leaving a 2 on 1 w/the puck coming down the right wing. The one defenseman over commits to the puck which makes for an another crisp centering pass which is tipped home. Garrett Wilson made an excellent attempt to back check but couldn't manage to tie up the Kzoo's player's stick. Fault - Both defense and Chet. Aronson has to get the puck out of the zone. Since the play wasn't full cross ice and it was a 5 hole redirect it's one that Chet has to make.

3rd Kzoo goal - The shot initiated from the outside right heading low to Chet's glove side which he had covered. The puck was then redirected to the far top corner. There was one Kzoo player and one Cyclone player in front of the net but the Cyclones defenseman was doing little to tie up or move the Kzoo forward and not let puck get tipped or tip it himself. Fault - Cyclones defense. It started well enough with the shot being forced from the outside but soft play in front leads to a redirect which was unplayable by any goalie.

4 Kzoo goal - Kzoo cycles the puck in the corner to Chet's right where they work it down behind the goal line. The Kzoo forward then passes to Karlander who was camped out in the right face off dot for several seconds for a one timer which he buries. Fault - Defense. While it is a save that the Cyclones needed to Chet to make, giving Karlander an uncontested shot from that range is one that he's going to bury 8 out of 10 times. To make it worse, there wasn't a single Cyclone defender within 6 feet of him.

While the Cyclones D was breaking down Kalamazoo made sure the Cyclones were tied up anytime the puck got into a scoring area. When there was a Kalamazoo break down Maxime Clermont came up big. There was a sequence of back to back glove saves in the 2nd period that come to mind.

Chet's biggest blunder of the game was less a blunder and more of a brilliant play by the Kzoo forward. As a 1 on 1 race for the puck developed down the right side, as Chet came out to play the puck the Kzoo player actually slowed down and peeled to the right side wall by the blue line since odds are, that's where Chet was going to try to clear the puck to. Great move by the Kzoo forward. Chet's mistake wasn't coming out to play the puck, but making his mind up so early what he was going to do with it. A quick glance up and he sees where the Kzoo player is and he might have been able to just drop it back to the corner where it could have been picked up by our defenseman.

I'll give you that Chet was downright ugly in in the shootout but he made some big saves throught the game and in OT to get it to a shootout. If Sisca doesn't fumble the puck or Eves passes to Luciani in OT, it may not even have gotten that far.

At the end of the day the Cyclones have lost (not taken 2 points) in 5 straight games using all 3 goalies. They have to learn how to play for 60+ minutes every night.

Couldn't fault him on any of the regulation goals. Can't recall a big save either. He never seems to have one. When he came out of his crease on the PP he was just very lucky not to get burned.

The team rallies back after tightening up the defense and Chet just let them down completely in the SO.

He's got the worst save percentage in the league. He had the second worst last year. He just is not good. Nashville needs to just bite the bullet and release him. They've tried everything and the Cyclones have tried everything and it just don't work.

@fangers - While Chet is the only Cyclones goalie to win a Shootout this season, I think last night was an illustration that Chet's game, or lack there of at times, is in his head. He's thinking too much. At some point he's got to just get back to basics and just react right...?
