CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones (28-21-1-7) enjoyed a three-goal outburst to start the third period and knocked off the Wheeling Nailers (32-20-3-3) by a 7-5 final score in front of 6,891 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night. It was the third-largest crowd to witness a game at 100 Broadway this season and 16th largest in regular season franchise history.
For the 18th time this season, Cincinnati opened the scoring as Anthony Luciani blasted in a one-timer past Nailers goaltender Peter Delmas (L, 27 saves, 15-9-1-1) at 8:01, making it 1-0. However, Wheeling answered back with a power play goal from former Cyclone Christiaan Minella at 13:08 to knot things at one after 20 minutes of play.
There was an offensive explosion in the middle stanza, as the teams combined for six goals. The Cyclones pulled ahead 2-1 just 41 seconds into the period as Mathieu Aubin sent a wrist shot past Delmas, giving him 200 points in his Cincinnati career. Then, at 3:37, Garrett Wilson lit the lamp for the 16th time this year as he redirected a Maury Edwards slap shot to give his team a two-goal cushion. Wheeling, though, would respond immediately; Zach Hansen and Andrew Hotham potted goals at 4:48 and 9:32 respectively, pulling even with Cincinnati again at 3-3. Not to be outdone, the Cyclones struck again when Taylor Aronson finished off a two-on-one break by burying his sixth of the season at 9:58. Once again, however, the visiting team found the equalizer when Denver Manderson snapped a shot past Cincinnati net minder Brian Foster (W, 23 saves, 12-6-0-1) just 43 seconds later to tie the game at four heading into the second intermission.
The Cyclones jumped ahead for good just 0:36 into the final period when Aubin caught a Mike Pelech pass and directed in his second goal of the night, giving Cincinnati a 5-4 lead. Just 25 seconds later, defenseman Alain Goulet took a wrist shot from the low rim of the circle and beat Delmas up high, making it 6-4 Cyclones. The offense for Cincinnati continued at 5:33 when Aubin fed Eves through the Wheeling goal crease who tipped in his 13th lamp lighter of the year. Wheeling made it a two-goal game again at 7:29 as Ben Farrer beat Foster by poking a loose puck into the net. But, Cincinnati’s defense stayed strong in the final minutes and held on for a 7-5 victory.

Is Foster the new Chet? Is Chet the new Foster? Or are they both Gajewski clones?
Great 70s/80s style hockey last night. Lotsa pretty goals, crappy defense and even worse goaltending. Minus the fighting sadly.
Eaves had 5 points. If there is justice in the call up world, the he'll get one. So will Aubin. So will Pelech. If justice occurs, then what happens when the Federal League runs out of players? Do we have to forfeit?
8 game road trip. Gotta think that a split is the minimum needed to get in the playoffs. No small order for a team which has only won 6 out of 25 on the road and has only captured 34% of all possible road points. Maybe the duration of the trip will help instead of the one day in and outs which have constituted that majority of road trips this year.

The AAC line had a really nice night, Foster didn't.
Delmas alternated between being a windsock and making great saves. Strange game for him.

Dont think I have ever seen more pretty goals in one game by a team than I saw last night from the Cyclones. Not one garbage goal among them--tip ins, cross ice passing etc. For someone who is new to the game, it was a real example of how pretty goals can be.
I was also impressed with Gaudet. He looked great carrying the puck out of our end and his goal was a thing of beauty with a laser after moving in from the point after a nice faked shot.
8 straight games on the road. They need 9 points to maintain their winning percent and I would love to see 10. They have been dismal on the road this year but were in the same make/break position last year when they went South and had a great trip that was the key to making the playoffs. Today's game is the only one against a team below them in the standings and a big one to win. Tired of losing in Toledo on Sunday afternoons |
