FYI, this is not the first year that this particular 2-3 format has been used. This is the third year in a row where it has been in place.

You are correct. In each of the previous playoff seasons, 3 out of the 4 higher seeds opened up on the road. The exception in each year would seem to have been due to scheduling conflicts with either of the teams involved.

It still remains a poor system in my view. The possible savings are meager, and the possible loss of revenue to the higher seeded team and the full force of home ice advantage just don't add up.

Fort Wayne will throw a fit next season if they are adversely affected by this format

They possibly will but they will also know it coming into the league. They don't run the ECHL like they did/do the CHL/IHL. So I doubt it would matter much to the league if they are bitching...

Doesn't the higher seed get the choice of holding the first two or last three?

Edit: Also, is the 2-2-1 format still available to those teams within a certain distance from each other (in 2010 it was 350 miles)?

It's going to be a blast razzing all the Fort Wayne fans on this stuff.

The IHL 2 was a joke. It really should have been named FWHL.

It sounds like the CHL is on life support. Is the plan to fold the league and move a handful of teams into the ECHL where possible?

With the imminent defection of Fort Wayne and Evansville there are 12 teams left in the CHL. They are:

Arizona-geographically isolated and draw poorly

Dayton-absence of "new investors" is done

Bloomington-shaky ground. Highest crowd of year 4800

Quad City-4 ownerships in last 4 years. Rumored to have missed payroll at one point this past season

Laredo and Rio Grande Valley-both draw poorly and have seen other Texas teams move to the much cheaper junior level without losing much attendance.

All six of these franchises are not in good shape.

The six that are in reasonable shape: Tulsa, Wichita, Missouri, Rapid City, Allen and Texas could probably operate a six team league for a few years. Because six of the teams are in ok shape, "life support" might be a bit of an stretch. Right now.

I would think that once some of the six teams in trouble start dropping, that the remaining teams would be at least open to the idea of becoming a division within the ECHL instead of a league in and of themselves. That division could play the majority of games among themselves with a portion of their schedule playing outside...some to the East others to the West. I'd be very surprised if there hasn't been some substantial talk between the ECHL and CHL on this matter. A one league AA system seems to be the direction in which this level is going.

Thanks for the thorough breakdown, ratsncats. Are the Franks still involved with the CHL ownership? If so, that would seem to greatly impact Ft. Wayne's departure and the entirety of the CHL.

Don't forget this tidbit.......

CHL Welcomes Denver for the 2012-13 Season
Expansion Club Announced for Next Season; Will Play in Denver Coliseum

GLENDALE, AZ (April 10, 2012) – The CHL announced on Tuesday that a team in Denver, Colorado has been granted franchise rights for the 2012-13 season. The announcement was made at a press conference at the Denver Coliseum, the new home of the Denver CHL franchise.

The Denver CHL franchise’s investment group is led by John A. Hayes who is president and CEO of the Broomfield-based Ball Corporation.

“It’s a great day in the City of Denver,” said Duane Lewis, CHL Commissioner. “We are very excited to partner with John Hayes and his staff as well as the City of Denver and welcome them into the Central Hockey League. We are very confident that the Denver CHL franchise will reflect John’s (Hayes) dedication, work ethic and success and will be one of the elite franchises in the league. Denver has such a rich hockey past and present and we are very pleased to have the CHL a part of Denver’s hockey future.”

The team also introduced some of the people that will be tasked with running the franchise as Brad Lund was announced as the team’s President, Brent Cullaton is the team’s Assistant General Manager and Director of Hockey Operations and Derek Armstrong was introduced as the team’s head coach.

“My family, my business and my roots are in Colorado and it was personally important for me to locate this franchise in my hometown,” said Hayes. “These teams provide significant help for local economies and this is a unique way to be involved in my community.”

“I started my pro career here and now I have the opportunity to get back to the city and continue my career as a coach, which is wonderful,” said Armstrong. “It’s a great city. I’m excited to be involved with the game I love and I’m looking forward to getting started for next season.”

The Denver Coliseum opened in 1952 and is celebrating its 60th anniversary this year and is owned and operated by Arts & Venues Denver, a division of the City and County of Denver. In its past, the Denver Coliseum has hosted the International Hockey League’s Denver Mavericks (1958-59), the Western Hockey League’s Denver Invaders (1963-64), the Western Hockey League’s Denver Spurs (1968-76) and the International Hockey League’s Denver Rangers (1987-89).

“Hockey has been a part of the Coliseum’s history almost since the beginning and we’re excited to see it return,” said Kent Rice, Arts & Venues Denver Executive Director. “The CHL is putting its trust and assets into this community and we’re extremely proud.”

The team announced that they will announce the team name, colors and unveil the logo in the near future.

What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

ZINGER!!!!!

The teams in the CHL are independently owned. The CHL-the league entity itself-is owned by Global Entertainment. There used to be a stock which traded for this company but it was delisted (taken off the exchange which it was on-I forget which) over a year ago.

The Frankes are just a member team of the CHL. They aren't involved with any ownership in Global Entertainment to the best of my knowledge.

I don't know if the Franke's "owned" the IHL2, but their influence in that league was as if they owned it. They would love to be in a position to be top dog in a league, but that train has passed. The Komets rode it for as long as they could and they were quite successful doing it.

The addition of Colorado may or may not be a positive addition to the CHL. I still think that the CHL and ECHL will reach an agreement in the not-so-distant future and play in the same league under the ECHL name.

Hey guess what? Apparently the AHL and ECHL agree that in a 5 game series using the 2-3 format where the better seed gets the choice of starting on the road and getting 3 games at home or starting on home ice for 2 games then going on the road for 3 games is a fair system.

What does everyone think of this schedule? Top seed Alaska starts out
first two on the road in Las Vegas before coming home for FOUR home
games. If game 7 needed, back at Las Vegas (lower seed). Alaska did
their job with split in Vegas. Now only have to win 3 of 4 to move on.
Vegas won first game in Alaska so now all they have to do is win one of
the next three to host the final. GO VEGAS !!!
