CINCINNATI , Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, announced today that forward Alex Penner has agreed to terms with the club for the 2012-13 season.
Penner, a Simcoe, Ontario native, will enter his sixth professional season this fall. A season ago, he played for the Colorado Eagles where he led the team and finished third in the ECHL with 239 penalty minutes. In 2010-11 he split time between the Nottingham Panthers of the EIHL and Colorado, accumulating 371 penalty minutes in 46 total games. The six-foot-four, 240 pound forward logged 222 minutes in the sin bin while adding 12 points (5 goals, 7 assists) for the Eagles during the 2009-10 campaign. Penner’s first ECHL stint came in 2008-09 when saw ice time in 38 games with the Johnstown Chiefs while also skating in eight contests for the Lake Erie Monsters (AHL). His first professional season came with the Laredo Bucks of the CHL where he racked up 186 penalty minutes in 53 games in 2007-08. Prior to going pro, Penner played two years in the OHL and one in the MJAHL.
“Alex is not only a fierce competitor but a great teammate as well,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. “He is going to bring a physical edge to our group and we’re excited to have him.” |
...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones! |

| Looks like the Cyclone won't get pushed around this year. A lot of size on this roster. It'll be nice to see them win the battles in the corners and in front of the net. |

If this is the guy I think it is he's a straightforward goon. 10th forward, very little ice time unless it's a short bench.
Don't get me wrong, a guy like that isn't a bad feature in the ECHL and he's one of the bigger, badder ones. Rather have him on our bench than the other one.

| I thought this is what we had Liambas for? Do we need two goons? |

Nobody feared Liambas and the Cyclone got manhandled most games last year. Penner, along with some of the other new, big players, should be able to maintain a little more order. Cincinnati had a small squad last year, with the exception of Vaive, who wasn't very physical considering his size. Keeping the opposition a little more honest should create more opportunities for Sisca, Aubin, Pelech, etc. |

Maybe the Wednesday-Thursday beer crowd. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcSIdhU2Y2w Makes me glad I'm going to buy games one at a time instead of season tickets. Will probably still see 20 or more games but less if it turns into a "goonfest". |

Liambas is done trying to be the fighter/enforcer, direct words from his mouth at the first open house. Scalde also said he will just be a regular player. While he was always willing to throw down - his size just didnt put fear into anybody unlike Justin Johnson and Hans Benson did.
I really doubt it will turn into a goonfest - even given that we now have Penner and Sawyer. They will supposedly be there only to make sure the other teams dont try to take cheapshots. Given their track records and sheer size, I dont feel teams will be trying to cheapshot the smaller guys this year. |

Hope your right. Liambas looked good when he was playing a "clean" defenseman but at the end he was back "head-hunting" for the big hit. As for a "goonfest", the more you have around, the more the other team is prone to bait them into fights. Weber did a great job with Johnson and Benson, but Skalde did not with Liambas. JJ tried his best to play clean hockey, but the refs and opposing fighters kept calling him out. I do agree we need to stick up for our skill players, but players looking for the big hit when it's not needed are more harm than good. |

My favorite JJ moment, and I can't remember the opponent or the other player, was: during an offensive zone face-off he was trying to bait an opposing player to drop the gloves at the drop of the puck. The other player wouldn't drop them. Right off the face-off JJ scores a goal, goes nuts, bounces off the glass etc. Priceless. |
Never argue with an idiot. He'll drag you down to his level and then beat you with experience

| There's a big difference between JJ and Hans and what you get with Penner. JJ and Hans all had some ability to play the game but the fact they could fight put their ability secondary on most teams. Chuck gave those guys a chance to put their ability first and fight second. By becoming regular players they were on the ice more which made the opposition think twice about getting out of line. In short JJ and Hans were liabilities when it came to playing the game. Penner on the other hand is a straight up fighter. He skates better than James Delory (which isn't saying much) but beyond that he's a waste of a roster spot. Maybe he's stepped up his game over the years but from what I recall of him from when he played in Johnstown he doesn't bring much to the ice beyond pugilism. |

True, but he's a pretty spectacular pugilist, and after all this IS the ECHL. Like I said before, I'd rather have him on our bench than the other one.
If he's the 10th forward, plays 4 to 5 minutes a game, and minimizes the dumb minor penalties while being an effective enforcer then cool. We'll have an ass kicking fan favorite that keeps the other guys honest. If he's an idiot that can't skate and doesn't take someone from the other bench with him every time he goes to the box... Cut him loose.
From what I saw of this dude with Johnstown he's a big scary dude that can throw them with anyone in the league. It's good to have your own Sgroi if Sgroi is on the other bench. Just sayin'.
