Donnie & Elvis. You both missing my point. In other threads I've stated I understand and support that Zoltan has to be given chance to make the adjustment to NA hockey, so don't preach to me about that. My point was more towards those ready to give skalde coach of the year honors already, as to me the real value of a coach is how things go when facing a little adversity (like Foser being out).

Skalde and MacDonald can't score the goals and block the shots for them. More than the change in goal tending, I saw an overall softening of the play. While they were winning, they were winning puck battles, blocking shots, clearing the goal front, etc. When they started losing these things weren't happening. Z was getting screened, a lot. When the opposition was left to screen Foster, he struggled as well letting in a fair number of shots from the point. My point is they win as a team and they lose as a team, coaching included. Does Skalde need to change things up? Perhaps. OK, the power play definitely needs revitalization, but as coaches Mac and Skalde can't play the game for them and if the players are losing battles and making bad passes that's on them.

Yup--congrats to Zoltan. Nice to see he won and must have played well. Check back in a month though before you award him the Vezina Trophy. Basics like angles, rebound control, and glove use are still a big problem.

Keep in mind that the long held rule of thumb is that any goalie should be able to block 80% of the routine shots on goal which means about 24 out of the 30 shots in the average game. These are routine saves on open shots from the outside, shots from low on the boards etc. Any goal on such shots is considered a bad goal. The difference in goalies is then their ability to use their skills to save as many of the remaining 6 or so shots as they can. If they block 4 of the six their GAA is 2.0 and their overall save percent is .933 and they are an all star. Three out of six gives them a 3.0GAA and a .9 save percent and they survive. If they block only 2 out of the six their GAA is 4.0 and their save percent is.866 and they are out of the league. The slight difference between a bust and an all star then comes down to their ability to a) not give up bad goals and b) their ability to position themselves correctly and react in the right manner to the six "tough shots". Zoltan thus far has had problems with both. I am the first to hope he gets better but there are holes in his game

As they are for a lot of goalies in the ECHL, which is why they're in the ECHL.

Desjardins first season with the Cyclones, he had major issues with controlling rebounds and handling the puck. He got a little better in those areas the next season but it's still a problem for him, along with being injury prone.

Thank you Donnie for bringing up Cedrick's rookie year. He struggled as you mentioned but people only want to remember the Kelly Cup MVP version of him but he wasn't always at that level.

The same can be said for both Smith and Mayer who struggled to start their pro careers with the Cyclones. I can remember looking at those two and thinking "it's going to be a long year." They eventually found their games and went on to become Kelly Cup MVPs as well but no one wants to remember the start of the year.

How did those guys get better? They played. Where there struggles and bad goals, wins and losses? You bet but at the end of the season it all worked out.

I'm not saying Zoltan is the second coming, but you shouldn't write him off after such a small sample size, especially when the team played soft during those losses.
