CINCINNATI, Ohio – Behind an outstanding performance in net by goaltender Brian Foster, the Cincinnati Cyclones (17-8-2-0) picked up their third win of the week by beating the South Carolina Stingrays (13-15-1-1) by a 2-1 final score in front of 3,559 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night. With the victory, Cincinnati swept the Stingrays 3-0 in the 2012-13 season series.
After a scoreless first period, the Cyclones finally ended the offensive drought by way of a power play when South Carolina forward Chris Langkow was sent to the penalty box for holding. Mike Pelech delivered a pass from the left circle to Garrett Wilson who was waiting at the top of the crease. The second-year forward slipped it by the right leg of Stingrays goaltender Jeff Jakaitis (L, 25 saves, 0-1-1-1) at 8:20 of the middle frame for his 10th goal of the season. Cincinnati defenseman Brian O’Hanley was also credited with an assist on the play, marking his 100th point as a professional. The Cyclones extended their advantage to 2-0 at the 12:44 mark as John McFarland wrested a shot into the back of the net from between the circles after Pelech connected on a pass from behind the South Carolina goal. The score would remain 2-0 as the teams headed into the second intermission.
South Carolina cut the Cincinnati lead in half at 8:15 into the final period on a Hunter Bishop power play goal after he found a rebound in the slot. Despite several attempts in the final minutes, the Stingrays were unable to get past the defense of Brian Foster (W, 12-3-2-0, 25 saves) and company as the Cyclones held on to win by a 2-1 final score.
The Cyclones Radio Network Stars of the Game are as follows:
