CINCINNATI, Ohio – Despite a career-night for goaltender Zoltan Hetenyi, the Cincinnati Cyclones (21-12-2-1) dropped a 2-1 shootout decision to the Fort Wayne Komets (20-16-1-1) in front of 5,437 at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday night.

The Cyclones took advantage of an early power play opportunity as Garret Wilson received a Mathieu Aubin pass at the top of the crease and was able to tuck the puck past the left pad of Fort Wayne goaltender Kenny Reiter (W, 32 saves, 10-6-0-1) just 4:26 into the contest. The Komets would strike back, though, at the 17:35 mark when Brandon Marino slapped a rebound between the legs of Hetenyi (SOL, 40 saves, 4-4-0-1) from right along the goal line to even the game at one.

Both teams battled throughout the second and third periods, but no one could find the back of the net again and they decided the game in the extra session. Goaltenders Hetenyi and Reiter continued their outstanding performances through the overtime and after 65 minutes the teams were still deadlocked at one goal each. Hetenyi's 40 saves on the night was a career high.

Reiter turned away the first attempt in the shootout while Brayden Metz followed by getting the best of Hetenyi, putting a shot through his legs. Both goalies stopped the next two shots they faced. Then, after Reiter denied an Anthony Luciani offering, J.M. Rizk sealed the game for the Komets by dangling past the Cincinnati net minder for the game-ending strike. Fort Wayne earned the extra point by prevailing in the shootout, 2-1.

The Cyclones Radio Network Stars of the Game are as follows:

First Star: Brayden Metz (Game-winning goal in shootout)
Second Star: Zoltan Hetenyi (40 saves for Cincinnati, career-high)
Third Star: Kenny Reiter (Winning goaltender, 32 saves)

The same two teams will skate two more times this weekend at Memorial Coliseum beginning tomorrow night at 7:30pm. Fans can hear all the action of the game on the Cyclones Radio Network (CyclonesHockey.com / America One / Cyclones Mobile App) starting at 7:10pm!

The Cyclones will return to the ice at U.S. Bank on Tuesday, January 15 when they host the Elmira Jackals for the final time this season at 7:30pm.

...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones!

Sorry I have to disagree with the order-

First Star: Kenny Reiter (Winning goaltender, 32 saves)
Second Star: Zoltan Hetenyi (40 saves for Cincinnati, career-high)
Third Star: Brayden Metz (Game-winning goal in shootout)
That was a goaltending clinic and the first two stars were the goalies.
Both made their teams and fans proud last night. We had chances and
so did they but the goalies slammed the door time after time. Game
ended the way it should in regulation- both goalies equal. Almost
unfair one had to lose by the shootout.

Great job by Zoltan behind a decimated defense corps. Of course, he's on a plane today.

Seriously guys, this is getting worse than I thought it would be and I thought it would be pretty bad. If some of these guys don't start trickling back as fast as they are leaving at this pace we are going to start a game with 12 skaters and Brunker padded up again.

Thankfully OHanley, Wilson and McFarland are still around. For now.

It's going to be a wild ride for the next two weeks until the NHL rosters get situated. The defense is in a world of hurt and the SOG against is becoming a significant problem. It would be nice to see some of the top line forwards be able to finish. By the way, does anyone know why Samson Mahbod isn't playing anywhere? He could possibly help the scoring drought with his playmaking ability.

A little birdy once told me that Samson and Skalde don't like each other very much, so don't hold your breath.

Really? Did they have a major falling out during his time here? Do you know what happened? Interesting.

When Samson left, he thanked the fans and the city but called out Skalde. No reason was given, but yes.. you could say a falling out.

Edit: "Great city, great fans, great team" but an "awful coach" - Mahbod in April 2011.

Thank you. Yes, that would be considered a bridge burner.

In a game in Greenville, he quit on the team. I don't know what happened in the locker room during the intermission of that game, but when he came out for that 3rd period, he had the jersey pulled up, and he sat on the end of the bench pouting. He never saw the ice in a Cyclones uniform again.

He openly on the ice told me and the woman what he thought once when we went down for a season ticket holder on ice signature/team time session. The talk resembled what his facebook post above mentions. I would imagine the hit or miss games Cinci has been churning out for 2.5 years was agitating him. At least I got the chance to thank him and Sisca for their hard work and dedication they show out there.

Wow! That's pretty heavy duty stuff. Despite what a player thinks, he can't go blasting a coach he doesn't like at team events or in social media. That kind of behavior poisons the well and makes him a pariah in the eyes of a lot coaches/hockey operations personnel, thereby, limiting his career. Once he gets that reputation, nobody wants to introduce a "cancer" into the room.

Thanks for the insight. I had no idea.

Mahbod released by Alaska today (about 2 weeks later).

He wasn't the superstar that everyone (or himself) made him out to be.
