has anyone read the 2007 kelly cup format. i realize that the national conference only has 10 teams, but putting 8 of them in the playoffs c'mon. especially when you consider that based on the current format, any team from the american conference would have a chance at the playoffs...even pensacola, they would only be 7pts out of a playoff spot.
i realize that realigning the conferences to balance them out isn't really possible due to travel costs, but putting a team that could only manage to win 35% of their games in the playoffs is absurd, especially when you look at the playoff races. in our conference the battle for the 5th playoff spot is very tight (johnstown is in with 34pts, but wheeling and toledo are right there with 34pts and 33pts.) in the national conference the top 7 teams have 40pts or more, then it drops to 27pts for the 8th team. everyteam in the american conference, except pensacola, would be in.
either the league needs to expand the national conference to at leat 12 teams, or the league needs to reconsider the play off format. with the gap between the 7th and 8th playoff spots so large in the national conference, why not create a provision to allow the best non-playoff team from the american conference go to the national conference playoffs when it is obvious that the potential 8th seed (from the national conference) is not a playoff caliber team. it seems like a few of the national conference teams realize that they only have to beat 2 other teams to make the playoffs, and they play accordingly. maybe the possibility of losing a playoff bid might get those teams to be more competitive, which would be good for the fans, the league and the game of hockey. |
