From the press release: Pete Robinson, president of the Cincinnati Gardens explains, “Our hope would be to sell, and see the historic venue move forward in its current state: a sports and entertainment venue.” Robinson continues, “However, we are prepared to explore other opportunities.”
This was inevitable but still a bummer. I'm one that wishes the Cyclones still played there. Sure its old but its a much better hockey arena than USBA.
The last line of the quote above leads one to believe that soon enough a strip mall or condos will stand where the arena once was.

The Gardens provided a comfy home for multiple hockey teams, was the home of the only three pro football championships the city has ever had, and home to hot skaters... it would be a crying shame to see its current use go by the wayside... at the same time the Rollergirls are the only ones that really use the building anymore |
KELLY CUP CHAMPIONS- 2008, 2010 AMERICAN/EASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS- 2008, 2010, 2014 DIVISION CHAMPIONS- 1996, 2008, 2009, 2013 2008 BRABHAM CUP CHAMPIONS Boards + visitors = broken bones! |

Losing two sheets of ice that is booked solid for youth and high school hockey practices and games from mid September through March would be detrimental to the growth and development of amateur hockey in the area. Men's league teams also play there.
To save the arena and continue to have ice there for the amateur hockey programs, it's going to take someone that wants to buy it because it's good for the community and/or they want to preserve the history. Unfortunately, there aren't too many of those people out there. |

When the current owners bought the Gardens, I'm told that it was in the process of becoming a warehouse. So, they've added over 30 years of life to the place. Not bad. Still sucks for the hockey scene losing 2 ice rinks.
How many skating rinks are in the area? I only know of 3. USBA, Northland and the other place in Evendale. |

There is also the Northern Kentucky Ice Center in Villa Hills (a total dump) and the Indian Hill Winter Club (a private facility).
And USBA does not lease its ice surface to the public. So that would leave us with 5 total sheets for the entire metro area. |

True, Northern Kentucky Ice Center isn't the best place in the area when it comes to rink quality but the owners due make it easy for the little ones to get started in hockey by providing free equipment. Would it be nice to have full panes of glass and straight boards, of course but as far as I know they get no type of sponsorship or support other than the people who's kids play hockey and figure skate there. It would be nice to have Indian Hill's complex and money but you work with what you have. Went to Goggin this spring for the MYHL tournament....like walking into a hockey palace. WOW!!!
As for the Gardens, it was a great place to watch hockey and the atmosphere was outstanding. It was sad to see the Cyclones leave there but at the same time when they moved downtown it saved us over 30 minutes of drive time coming from NKY and factoring in traffic. It will be sad to see it go if it comes to that. |

Actually, that is nice that they provide free equipment for kids. But that rink is downright dangerous. I've played many games there. Bald spots on the ice at times and a permanent 4 inch gap along the boards at the Zamboni end. Hello, spiral fracture! It would be nice if they took their business seriously and made some minor capital improvements. |

I caught my stick between the ice and the boards and butt-ended myself in the stomach. It was sore for weeks.
As far as rinks in Cincinnati, I think the nearly vacant Biggs' shopping center across the Beechmont levee would be a perfect place to build a rink. |

Hakeedude and Reggie you make very valid comments about NKIC. I know exactly what you are talking about on the ice and according to what the owner told me was that for some reason the sand base gets soft there because the water pools during the freezing process. Still not good but luckily the kids have become accustomed to it being there and pull up when going for a puck in that end. Like you said it would be nice if they could fix some stuff, maybe they are holding on to cash and figure people still come there I don't know. I know the fees are pretty cheap when compared to Lexington and Louisville for mites which my son plays. I never looked into what they are for Cincinnati, I know they just merged their programs together. For me it is more about the coaches and the NKYHA, they seem to have a genuine interest in teaching the kids the game of hockey and sportmanship and they enjoy doing it as well.
If the Gardens gets sold maybe the new owners could donate some glass and boards to NKIC or offer them at a price that cannot be refused. Hell most of us wouldn't know how to act with glass you could see through and boards that are straight. They purchased two new goals this past year and that was like being a kid in a candy store. LOL

Really hope not. Theres already way too many of those types of places littering the landscape. I guess it will all depend on the owners motivations to sell. Hopefully they dont get a big offer from some out of town outfit with bad intentions and no regard for the history of the building. |

Are most of the high school games held there played in the adjoining facility or in the Gardens? If the sale takes awhile and they are playing next season I would like to watch one more game there. |

I know some HS games are played on the main ice. It's a great rink.
By the way, does anyone know if The Gardens is on the National Register of Historic Places? It would be truly tragic to lose a local treasure and landmark like that. |

Cincinnati Gardens is not on the National Register of Historic Places. Ballparks, stadiums and arenas with a more storied history like Chicago Stadium, Boston Gardens, the Spectrum in Philadelphia, Tiger Stadium in Detroit, Municipal Stadium in Cleveland, Mile High Stadium in Denver, County Stadium in Milwaukee weren't on the list, either. |

Like they would put an arena on the NRHP list... Wrigley Field is the only sporting venue I KNOW of and that might not even be accurate... if a land developer buys the site you know were bound for even more Wendy's, hotels and shops... aka the Gardens would be screwed! |
