Just now seeing this. I apologize for the delay.
There isn't a salary cap in the American Hockey League. AHL teams not owned by the NHL parent club pay the NHL parent club an affiliation fee for the use of the players, coaches, equipment and training staff. It varies from team-to-team what the affiliation fee is. The last year I was in the AHL in 2006-07, the affiliation fee ranged from $900,000 to $1.4 million per team.
Some teams, like the Chicago Wolves and Hershey Bears, liked to have 4-6 of their own players under contract which would lesson the affiliation fee since the NHL team would be responsible for supplying fewer players.
Some AHL teams hire (with the approval of the parent club) and cover the salaries of the head coach and equipment and training staff, such as Chicago and Hershey.
NHL teams don't make any money on the affiliation fee they receive. The salaries of the players they have under contract in the AHL and other expenses (coaches, equipment, training staff) far exceed the affiliation fee. But the loss they absorb is looked at as an investment in their future.
