Yes my wife and I are the Steven and Jean Bagel mentioned in the article! First off,
and you can see from the number of posts here,my wife's thoughts on Cyclone hockey is
more than just bathrooms,it's just I didn't really stop talking and let her get much
words in! It's a shame he couldn't have come down Friday night and see a good crowd at
the arena but instead picked a night when we didn't even go to work because of the ice.
I had a feeling it would be a standard hatchet job,but he did give plenty of area for
the Cyclones management to give some great words on the franchise.My first comments to
him when he said he was from the Enquirer was "Why can't we get more media coverage"?
His standard answer was "If the attendance was better they would".We all can remember the
non coverage when we did have better attendace and even the Duck fans can say they didn't
have coverage like they needed.At least we did get an article and maybe he will give us
another article later on when we do get this franchise turned around at the box office. |

ironically, media coverage goes hand in hand. you can't get good media coverage with out attendance and its hard to get the attendance up with out that coverage because people don't see the event as something "legitimate"
i'm thinkning since the papers won't cover us on there own, how about a grass roots letter to the editor campaign. if enough people write, come of the letters will get published. just a thought. |

Hey Bags was this guy from the Enquirer the one who was at the game three games ago (I think that was it). He was wearing a jacket with glasses and balding? He came down and sat below me and my friend who are at every game and just asked us random questions without even acknologing us such as "would you watch a team at the Gardens?" and then he said something sarcastic like "these crowds have been so huge" (of course he decided to go on a Wednesday game). We had no idea who he was at the time but we later found out from the Fan Club that it was an Enquirer reporter. I would have had a few words with him if I had known who he was previously, such as how the Enquirer does nothing to help boost attendance and hasn't in years.
The Enquirer usually puts every article online, I'm on today's sports page online and I don't see anywhere that it mentions the Cyclones, could you post the link to it?

He was down there Wednesday and it sounds like the same guy.I saw him talking to the
"Heckler" in between 2nd and third period near the front lobby amd pointed him out to
the Cyclones staff.The feeling I got was his Wednesday night visit was not known by the
Cyclones before hand,but he must have paid to get in so talking (but no pictures)was all
he could do.We talked to him before the game and he looked like he was talking to some
fans by "Wildman's Lair" during the first period. |

can we please get some positive press for the team. i couldn't beleive some of the things that were said in that article. yes, the article did say the team was winning, but how about mentioning that they are the only pro-sports team in cincinnati has a legitimate shot at the playoffs and a championship for the '06-'07 season. and how about talking to someone who is still active in the blueliners club rather than the resigned president. montreals vp had good things to say, but the articale seemed to just rehash topics from the old "hockey wars."
lets face it...the cyclones won. (this next bit is a repost because i thought it would fit in well here) then again most of the hockey fans that complain about the echl and AA hockey were ducks fans that were getting the reach around from pete robinson and are now bitter that the cyclones came back and the railraiders never even got rolling. they guy that was quoted in the enquirer article for example. he WAS the president of the blueliners club, a club that is supposed to promote hockey in cincinnati, ironically he resigned. i guess he just could stomach promoting all hockey and not just the teams that he wanted to see. i'm wondering what kind of fantasy worl jim questa is living in...miami u a better team than the cycolones...that might make for a good post season exhibition. people complain about paying for parking downtown, well there is just as much free parking at the landing as there is at the gardens. i went to one ducks game in my life (a relative game me tickets for christmas)i went down an hour before game time to see warm-ups and to take advantage of the free parking. when i got there the free parking was full, the lost was no bigger than the public landing. people say they don't want to go downtown at night...hello, the gardens was in a ghetto, granted it is in one of the nicer ghettos around town, but it is still in a ghetto. i was once at a cyclones game at the gardens and saw a parking attendant get stabbed and robbed...how about that for safe. i'm guess i'm just sick and tired of hearing people bad mouth the cyclones because the team was right in moving the team downtown and beacuase they're bitter about the fact that the cyclones are back and doing well on the ice. |

my question though to everyone who puts so much stock in media coverage is why was the team able practically sell out the gardens each night while downtown it's a struggle to get 2k into the building? mike i do think you touched on some of the "reasons" people give such as location and location but i think there has to be more than that to the problem.
what about the the promotions that the team has on a consistent basis? the media (enquirer/radio) can only advertise what the marketing department gives them. i mean the "wet wednesdays" really haven't been all that successful so what is promotions dept gonna do to see that it works better next year? what about a new idea altogther? maybe more family days (tho the kids and their toys about made me scream for the half period i was there yesterday!), discounted prices (buy one get one free) on a more consistent basis?? (i believe both dayton and perhaps toledo do it on a frequently). as much as some of us hate dayton i was at a weekend game and their crowd was at least the size what this (FIRST PLACE) team should see on a nightly basis.
i bring these ideas up as a way to get hockey fans in the building or people who only know a litle but are curious and are ready to learn and understand the game. i want to fill the building each night and see the team be successful but not at the expense of the games itself. i feel that too many of the promotions are geared towards people who in no way shape or form take an interest in the game and until that situation is handled there will continue to be less than quality (size) crowds.

Grrrr! Articles like that make me glad the Enquirer doesnt cover us.
Why do they give that Jim Questa guy any print time? He is simply the negative viewpoint. What concern does he have with the Cyclones other than an "I-told-you-so" guy when we dont draw 10000 a game?
Sure, the ECHL is a level below AHL. I admit it. I went to plenty of Ducks games. They were closer and less expensive for me. But I had full seasons for the Cyclones from the beginning to the second season downtown, so I truely dont understand the love one-hate the other mindset. My wife and I love hockey. I hated the IHL folding. I thought it was a better league than the AHL. When money got tight and we had to decide between AHL Ducks and ECHL Cyclones for about the same price, we picked the Ducks.
I hated to see the AHL leave and the RailRaiders bust.
So what?
When the Cyclones announced their return I literally ran around cheering. I called and got tickets that Monday. We got a half-season because we remembered how difficult it could be for us to get downtown. Well we have only missed three games so far. We will get full seasons next year.
If Jim Questa is comparing the last Ducks squad to the ECHL well of course there is a drop. That was the NHL strike year, and that whole squad nearly is in the NHL. We had NHL hockey for AHL prices.
But if he tries to compare ECHL to college, I went to the Frozen Four in Columbus two years ago, and none of those teams could even compete with the Cyclones. It was a good time, but not good hockey. Those were the NCAA's best and they would probably not score a goal. I was quite impressed at the skill level after the pre-season game, and told everyone at work who love hockey how good the ECHL had become. Just look at Wirll's toe-drag around the defensemen friday night. Noone in college could even attempt that.
Sorry for my rambling, but I see our crowds. They are excited and cheering and, I suspect, will return in droves. |

| my memory might be hazy from all that PBR but when the cyclones first moved downtown they were selling both the upper and lower bowls and putting a lot of people in both. i think they were averaging somewhere around 3000 on week nights and 5000 to 6000 on the week ends (if someone knows how to look those stats up from the first couple of season at the arena, i'd love to know if my memory is correct.) the fan base at the gardens wasn't built overnight. it toold a few seasons before the team was putting those numbers up at the gardens. when the team moved downtown most of those fans came along. the attendance fell once the ducks came to town. as much as it sucks, cincinnati only has the fan base for one team. as it stands now, cyclones hockey was gone for 3 years and hockey in general was gone for 2, it is going to take some time to rebuild that fan base. the one good point the article did make was that the team did not have a full summers worth of marketing and promotion. we'll see what they do over the summer. the bottom line is that cincinnati can support a hockey team, but just one. i think it is great that that team is the cyclones and that the robinson's aren't involved, but negativity doesn't help at all. people like jim questa should put his money where his mouth is. if he is so into promoting hockey in cincinnati, why isn't he a season ticket holder for the cyclones? |

thanks raptorov! i'll have to take a close look at that site sometime.
i was a little low in my estimates, but the numbers so show that the city can support a team. lets hope that with some good off season promotion we can raise our average by at least 1500 or so.
