Marc LaBelle! (not Cory Urquhart)
LaBelle was one of my favorite players on the IHL Cyclones team. He was signed today by the team and will play his first professional game in seven years. I am hugely excited about this because I will see one of my favorites from my glory days (the IHL days) but not sure how his on-ice performance will be.

Calm down ... first of all he probably wasn't signed to play for a while. I see it being a short-term deal with all of the call-ups lately. And if that's the case, it is cool for us who were fans in the IHL years to see some of the players. Labelle is a great person and I would love to see him do well again in this stint.
And Bebe - I LOVE that idea. |

| Plus we should feel good about the fact that all of our players are getting a chance to play in higher leagues! It says great things about Chuck and his ability to choose quality players and make them great athletes. Isn't that what his job is? Isn't this a "training" league? With all of the talent that is being sucked away from us, it just makes room for more young guys to have a chance to live out their dreams (when we can find the young ones!)...CHEERS to Chuck and all his hard work paying off! |

| the problem is we get picked apart...especially when they happen all at once like this...and we really don't have a farm team to pull from. the trickle down effect sucks since we are the bucket at the bottom so to speak. it is great for the players but for a supporter of the TEAM it sucks. |

If we can come up with the "emergency goalies" at the drop of a hat,
why can't we find some emergency forwards,centers and defensemen?
Seeing Marc on the ice makes me wonder how many other former Miami
U. players,Bowling Green players and all other area schools have former
players playing in Friday night leagues who could fill in for ten
minutes in a game like Marc did tonight. That's the reason I brought
up a guy like Nikos Tselios to maybe drop a line on.By the way,could
you have imagined the mood of the crowd if Marc had scored or got in
a fight today! Dov deserves a big hand for coming through this weekend
and lets also give Ben some playing time. |

| the problem is emergency back up goalies don't really have to play...if they can its nice but a lot of times the emergency back up goalies are awful (i won't name names, but i can) and the team just needs some one crazy enough to put the gear on and have pucks shot at him in the event of disaster....while forwards and defensemen, have to take a semi-regualr shift so if you have too many guys from "friday night" leagues it becomes a real liability. remember, these friday night" guys may love playing hockey, but there is a reason they are playing in house leagues and not in a pro or semi-pro league. we'd be better off scouting the other minor pro-leagues, like the sphl. that is where we got gallagher and he has turned out pretty well. |

I hear people complain about the fact that this is AA minor-league hockey, and that the AHL is so much faster. But seeing Labelle out there yesterday, and seeing the huge difference in his skills (not that they wouldn't get better with some practice and playing time)compared to the rest of the guys, really brought home to me how much ECHL hockey has improved over the years.
I remember the typical ECHL pass (past they guy and off the boards). Everything is so much cleaner and crisper than it used to be. |

without doubt the echl has changed. it started as a league based on "old time" hockey. the teams had a couple skilled players and the rest of the guys basically just beat the crap out of each other. it was great for putting fns in the seats but not so great for developing hockey players. there are a lot more youth hockey programs around now so there a lot more kids playing hockey at high levels now than there were 15 years ago. that means there are more skilled players to fill the minor levels of pro-hockey. i would hope that all of the people that passes on the old echl and went to watch the ducks (it is funny that people say that because when the ducks were here the cyclones were in the IHL until the last few seasons and the IHL was considered on par with the AHL) would come down and watch a game, i think they would find themselves very surprised.
then again most of the hockey fans that complain about the echl and AA hockey are ducks fans that were getting the reach around from pete robinson and are now bitter that the cyclones came back and the railraiders never even got rolling. they guy that was quoted in the enquirer article for example. he was the president of the blueliners club, a club that is supposed to promote hockey in cincinnati, ironically he resigned. i guess he just could stomach promoting all hockey and not just the teams that he wanted to see. |
