Given the incredibly poor quality of refereeing the last game, I have some questions. 1) What qualifications does a ref need in order to get hired by the ECHL? 2) Are there a scarcity of refs? (there's an obvious scarcity of good refs). 3) Where do ECHL refs come from (yeah, I know--that's a question begging for comment...)?
Also-it would seem, that ECHL level ref-ing might be the hardest level to keep control of the game- youngest pro players, less disciplined, less skilled than AHL or NHL. What do you think? |

from what i know most have been around hockey for a long time as either players or junior AA or AAA referees. the players switch to ref-ing when they relise they aren't going to make it as players and then just work their way up. usually they start out as linesmen before graduating to referee. i'm sure there is some kind of certification that they must go through to get into the league.
i heard hammel say that sean reid, the ref from the second toledo game, spent most of the year in the OHL, which is major junior hockey, not the pros. my question is why is a guy that spent most of the season refing in the OHL doing refing a playof game. there aren't that many games going on, seems to me that someone else should be available.
generally speaking, to the refs defense, they are being asked to enforce the NHL rulebook in a game that is almost as fast as the NHL with only 1 ref where as the NHL games get 2. obviously they are going to miss some calls, but last night was ridiculous.
you might try to asking your questions to the echl through the website. i'd be interested in seeing what the official answer would be. |

| 1) all you need to be a ref is you must be blind and have less than 2 brain cells, 2) yes there are, and 3) they come striaght off the streets |

| being a ref must be one of the must unrewarding jobs you can have,there is not much cheering for a ref in any game.Who wants to come work and get slammed ?The best they can hope for is to earn respect from players,coaches,and fans.Does that seem possible? |
