I go to this website to have a good laugh about our great Media in this town of Cincinnati. This is the link to the Cincinnati Cyclones on Our Sports Central. If you look at "Latest News" at the bottom you will see stories from the media. That's Right you guessed it. If look at how many stories were from the Cincinnati Enquirer Sports Digest. And then look at the stories written by the other team the cyclones where playing against. Read there newspaper and how big there news articles are compared to ours here in Cincinnati. www.oursportscentral.com/sports/?t_id=271
I have post links to all of our sports media in our town below. I have already written a letter to the Editor of The Cincinnati Enquirer asking how come The Cincinnati Cyclones "THE ONLY WINNING PROFESSIONAL SPORTS TEAM IN CINCINNATI" only get there scores put in the "Sports Digest". And when I come home from the games and I turn on the news to watch the sports and to see that they will either have Hightlights of the game or even mention there was a game downtown. There is NO Excuse why they should not have highlights of the game.

I say, copy all these e-mail addys, and write every one of them asking WHY? Keep writing them till we get a response. Whoever we do not hear from, we move to PLAN B
PLAN B
I say we set up a rally in front of one of the newspapers or television stations. This is absolutely BS! Instead of talking about something good around here, we have to read crap about whining,LOSING, team chemistry,LOSING, criminals on our home teams, LOSING, coaches on the chopping block, LOSING, The Brown family, LOSING, and more LOSING! The only item better in this town right now is remembering Joe Nuxhall. This team, these boys, we as fans, and this piece of chit city deserve to hear about something good. They work their butts off for $1500 a month. These aren't arrogant self proclaimed "superstars" who would rather look good than win. They are kids! I am going to write something up and e-mail EVERY person on this list. If anyone else would like to rally, SPEAK UP!! I will start taking names. When we have enough people with balls enough to do it, I will plan a date time and place. I will get everyone's e-mail at a later time. Right now we need all you supporters who are sick of this crap! |

It's a great idea but until we can average 4500 fans, all these news outlets will use that for a reason. I know that's bull, but that's more reason for yelling when the attendance count comes up WAY LOWER than what we actually have. This is another reason why our management needs to look at 6500 fans at $6 a ticket compared to 1200 at $14.Last time I looked, that empty chair next to me never bought soda, beer, popcorn or shirts. I bet ads would be more valuable with a 4500 average crowd also. |

Here's what I am e-mailing all the addys listed above. I understand bags, but we have to try something. I am STILL running into people who don't even know the Clones are back in town. Everyone copy this and e-mail them as well. Let's see what they say.
To whom it may concern,
I am an avid Cincinnati Cyclones fan, as well as a huge sports fan in general writing you today to try and figure out WHY the Cyclones are not getting ANY media attention. Are you aware that the Cyclones are in first place? Did you know they hold the 2nd best record in the ECHL? How about a 6-0-1 record in their past 7 games tying a franchise record? Are you even aware they are back in town? If you can answer yes to any of these questions, WHY do the Cyclones not get ANY media attention when they are the ONLY winning Professional Sports Team in Cincinnati? All this without any headlines or anything more than 1 sentence written weekly in the paper. Imagine what it would be like if this town and it's media were behind them.
The players are kids, ranging from 18-30 years old. They make less than a full time employee at McDonalds. They are not self-proclaimed "superstars" we are accustom to in this town who would rather look good than win. They bust their butts every day, ride a bus to away games, have a meal budget, and keep on winning. For what? All they are looking for is a chance. A chance to advance their careers to the next level. Without the media, it is up to the players and the coaches to help them get that chance.
Do these KIDS, the Cincinnati Cyclones, their fans, and this town a favor. PLEASE give them the attention they so deserve. They have earned it. It's not handed to them on a platter as with the Reds or the Bengals. This town is full of bad news. We are tired of reading and hearing about whining, LOSING, team chemistry, LOSING, coaches on the chopping block, LOSING, criminals, and more LOSING. Give this town something good to read and hear about and maybe even be a little proud of. We all deserve that!
A response to this would be utmost appreciated. Please take two minutes out of your day to at least let me know your ideas and if there is anything that may be done about this.
Thank You,
Kevin aka, HECKLERFROMHELL #666 |

| Clap clap :P...well put Heckler. 700WLW 20/20 sports on a game day or after a Cyclones game always says the score or there is a game tonight. For the other stations and newspapers are worthless. I wrote the letter to the editor and gave them my .02cent worth. |

HERE'S WHAT I HAVE SO FAR!!
Kevin Thanks for the thoughts! The Clones are having a heck of a season. I mention them on the show after each game. And I'm planning a HOMER Outing to take listeners to the game. Having said that....they draw 3-4,000 per game......in an area of 1.2 million. Why do you expect more coverage? And the media's job is NOT to promote interest in teams.......the media reflects interest in teams. 3-4,000 is the interest....hence the coverage. Thanks
-- Lance McAlister: 1530 HOMER-WCKY Hey Kevin,
I too am a fan of the Cyclones. As a matter of fact, a guy who I grew up with on the same street, played sports with and went to elementary school with played for the Cyclones. His name is Jason Deitsch and if I'm not mistaken he made the All-Star team last year and was called up. That being said, in our sports section on our website I have been putting up Cyclones content, b/c like you I like the Cyclones. I'm also an avid sports fan of many sports as well as teams and try to put up content about as many teams/sports as I'm allowed to. I can only do so much, I don't control what they cover on the air, and what I've been trying to do is keep our Cyclones tab current with how the team is doing. Hopefully this helps.
Thanks for the input, I love talking sports, Ian Thanks, Kevin... I'm not in charge... here's who is: Josh Pichler, sports ed.. 768-8437...jpichler@enquirer.com... good luck...Paul Kevin, I appreciate your enthusiasm for the Cyclones, but I won't be talking about those guys. One, I know nothing about hockey. Two, this is the first email or call in SIX months requesting coverage, so I don't think the audience wants to hear it. And three, as nice as they are and as humble as they are, that doesn't equal coverage. Interest does, and I don't think there's enough interest in the Cyclones to discuss them. Gregg Doyel |

Several hundred thousand people in the Greater Cincinnati area care about the NFL and the Bengals which is why they could go 0-16 every year and they'd still receive the same type of coverage. Even in the 1990's when the Bengals were going 3-13 every year, they still had a season ticket base of 45,000. People in this town care about the Bengals and they care about the NFL.
The Reds are a Major League Baseball team that draws more than 2.5 million fans a year. The media will cover the stories that are of the most interest and what the Reds do matters to a lot of people.
There are things the Cyclones can do to get more coverage but it's on them to sell those stories to the media and know where other opportunities for media exposure might be. There is one opportunity that is available to them that they're not taking advantage of that would definitely enhance the awareness of the team. |

What we need to do now is hit the CYCLONES with emails urging CHEAP Wednesday Nights. Every Wednesday offer $8 seats,$1 beer, soft drinks, popcorn and hot dogs. Change the emphasis from "Drinking Wednesday" to "Family Wednesday" and urge people to have a cheaper night out. As much as I might hate running loose kids, I hate the empty seats even more. My guess is four more 5,000 plus games will get more notice with the media than a few emails. My hats off to you Heckler for your letter and it will get some attention, but our main target should be our own people. |

The $6 ticket worked because they had something going on that engaged people with the Stingers jerseys, and the reason they were able to engage people was through advertising. They can make ticket prices $6 across the board but if most of their games are a secret it really wouldn't make much of a difference.
McDonald's has been around for decades and if there was anyone that didn't have to advertise it would be them yet they spend millions of dollars annually in every market they're in on advertising. They have to keep their name in front of everybody or their sales would drop off. The Cyclones are no different. If they want people to come to the games they have to aggressively market, promote and advertise and have things going on at every game that engage people. It's what the original ECHL Cyclones did and why they were wildly successful. |

Well put DH, the same old story is you have to give people more when you are selling a minor league product. The Florence Freedom is a prime example of giving their fans at least 95 cents for their dollar.Right now we are getting more like 80 cents. Yes the team is fantastic and unlike other local teams, our GM has really done their job. However the same can't be said in the promotion department and the media department. Start right now by slashing prices in the consession stands.Next get some coverage in the papers, even if you have to buy a 3" column section where you send the info to insert. Rent a kiosk in the mall and sell Cyclone merchandise this Xmas as well as selling tickets right there. What happened to puck, hats, mini sticks,flags,towels,hankies...nights??? |

The Cyclones should have a post-game autograph session after every Saturday home game involving the entire team on the ice. It's a promotion that wouldn't cost the Cyclones a dime and it would go a long way towards building a greater interest level in the team.
The way they should set it up is to put chairs along the boards in one of the zones, stretching it out from blueline to blueline. Each player would have an individual line to get an autograph and/or photograph. When it is set up this way, the fan gets to spend more time with each player.
For the fan that's attending perhaps their first game, if their kids get to go on the ice after the game and meet the players it's a pretty big deal and the kids are going to want to come back again to see the players they met and received an autograph from.
Again, this kind of stuff wouldn't cost the Cyclones a dime and would increase the interest level in the team. |

Unfortunately these types of topics pop up on message boards around this same time every year, with very similar e-mails sent. I have even wrote some of the e-mails myself. Always long yet convenient, informative, historical, and well-written. The sad thing is that nothing is ever done. The responses are always like from Daughtery in the bunch. Hell, sometimes there is no response. It is a cliche but unfortunately is the truth for the media, there will be no decent coverage until there are regularly 5k in the stands. They key word there is regularly. The Enquirer did not even mention Stingers Night or its success the day before, day of, or day after. No, I will not count the one or two sentences in the "Digest" section at the bottom of that page in the paper. REACH magazine so far, by my count, has the Enquirer beat in Cyclones coverage.
Discounted tickets are great, but the problem is that a lot of people, like probably a good majority of the diehard fans on here, payed $12 and $17 for their seats to every game. Cheapies are great and honestly I'm sure most of these fans would not really care about money over the success of the franchise, but the office simply would not do it for that reason. A couple of them, sure. Absolutely the $6 seats for Stingers night worked because it was advertised and had a great promotion around it. They used to a Pack The House Night. Tickets for it were $5 (if memory serves me correctly) even in the 03-04 season, commercials aired, and it was a success. Last season they had a perfect opportunity to repeat that, however they replaced the cheap ticket for a lame (XXL) white t-shirt and 0 discounts. I failed to see why that was labeled PTH night, but oh well.
As far as concession prices go, I don't think USBA will ever be smart enough to do something like discount items on more than one basis. Thirsty Thursdays and Wet Wednesdays apply only to college kids who go to the game for the sole purpose of getting drunk. When Wildman previews one of those games, it goes something like "find a babysitter and head down to the game". The "Thirsty" idea is typically not done in that fashion. The Florence Freedom, who they likely got the idea from, offers both $1 beers AND $1 sodas. The idea is not to not make it family-friendly, even if it is for a weeknight game. It's not just the Freedom, it's most teams who use that promotion.
I agree with you, bags, about the misc. items that seem to have been missing this year and in recent seasons. There have been decent promotions but nothing to show for them but a couple of flimsy posters. The trading card sets (I thought maybe that was just an IHL trend but other ECHL teams continue to do it), hats, pucks, ect should not have vanished. Kiosks set up in various malls around the tri-state is not a bad idea as I think getting some merchandise out can never hurt. The new merchandise guy has really stepped it up. I saw the kiosk they had at Florence and it was terrible. Firstly they couldn't have picked a worse location, secondly the other half of the kiosk (the one facing people) was for the Jungle Kats. |
