Is there any scuttlebutt on who might be the new assistant to help out Matt? I thought there may have been an announcement at Friday's event. I'd imagine there has to be an offer on the table to someone at this point.

Matt MacDonald will likely have to perform as both head and assistant coach. After highering a marketing firm to have an intern call the Carolina Hurricanes to acquire one of their rejected logos there's probably not enough in the budget to allow Matt an assistant.

Talked to Matt last Friday and asked him about the Assistant position. He indicated that they had people in mind and that he would be making a final decision most likely within the next 2 weeks.

I had that same sinking feeling.

Wow, really? I expect this from Elvis. But you, Reggie? You always seem to have a good perspective on things. SMH. If MacDonald coaches on his own this year, I'll eat my hat.

Actually, I'm confident Matt will have an assistant. It just seems kind of late in the year to not have one yet. The assistants are big assets with talent evaluation and player acquisition. I hope they hire one soon. Matt's plate must be extraordinarily full right about now.

Certain types of comments are starting to be expected out of me? Damn, I better change up my sarcasm.

Good call, tips.

Seems to be a strange choice. He has no experience as a coach, no history with the Cyclones, and I can't find any history of him playing with Matt. At least one of these connections is almost always there. Not saying it was a good choice or a bad choice but just a strange one

He's an experienced hockey guy who knows how to win, because he's done it. And he comes with a lot of AHL experience and from a good ECHL organization.

He'll learn about coaching from Matt. That's why he's an assistant.

Every coach starts somewhere with their first coaching job. For Cam Keith, he gets his first coaching experience in Cincinnati. There isn't always a connection needed when you're looking to hire the best possible people.

Sorry Donnie I don't agree. There is always a connection with either the head coach, the organization, or management especially if it is someone new to coaching. In some cases--and it could be the case here--it is a recommendation from a third party who has a connection with both sides. For example it could have come from one of our three previous head coaches who might have a history with him. I can't imagine any team in any sport hiring an assistant with no coaching experience without a connection to someone who judgement they trust and respect. Otherwise they might as well just put an ad in the newspaper

In any event, 33 days and counting

First year head coach with first time assistant coach sounds a little
scary but I like the idea of some new ideas in the mix. Biggest problem
seems like forever is no real power play. 2008 may be the last time we
had one worth talking about !

You're right. The power play (or admittedly a lack thereof) has been such a detriment to our success. A conference title, 2 conference finals appearances, and a division title. Hmmm. Way to see the big picture, though.
