In some cases--and it could be the case here--it is a recommendation from a third party who has a connection with both sides. For example it could have come from one of our three previous head coaches who might have a history with him. I can't imagine any team in any sport hiring an assistant with no coaching experience without a connection to someone who judgement they trust and respect. Otherwise they might as well just put an ad in the newspaper
In any event, 33 days and counting
Please tell me you don't really think that management would hire someone (assistant or otherwise) without doing their due diligence. Hockey is a small community. Whether or not there is a direct connection is irrelevant. I'd bet that MacDonald had plenty of discussion with his connections to make the decision. |

First year head coach with first time assistant coach sounds a little scary but I like the idea of some new ideas in the mix. Biggest problem seems like forever is no real power play. 2008 may be the last time we had one worth talking about !
You're right. The power play (or admittedly a lack thereof) has been such a detriment to our success. A conference title, 2 conference finals appearances, and a division title. Hmmm. Way to see the big picture, though.
Your right-no need to worry about a little item like the power play in hockey. If not for a goaltender playing almost at NHL level last year, we probably get eliminated in the first round. That's why I do like the "new blood" of Cam Keith to the mix and maybe some new ideas on some of our weaknesses-like the power play ! |

No doubt Madore was the MVP. But to assume that team would have been out in the first round without him is silly. Oh, and I guess that they've had NHL caliber goaltending each of the last three years then. Hmmm. Either way, we are in agreement that the PP needs to be better. |

Just reviewing the league stats from last year and discovered that the Cyclones led the league in goals--even more goals than Alaska, and also had the fewest penalty minutes. That is a strange mix of accomplishments. Even with those stats, they finished 17th in both PP and PK efficiencies. |

All I'm saying is I hope the new coaching tandem can make some needed adjustments to get the power play going. Our home effort has to be near the bottom of the league and many times we don't even get a quality shot on goal during the advantage. For this reason, maybe someone from the "west" ECHL will bring some new ideas to the mix. Yes I will agree these last 8 years have been great, but a glaring weakness needs to be addressed. |

It's a developmental league, so everyone is learning on the job. However, I do find it somewhat peculiar that they're pairing a rookie head coach with an assistant that has zero coaching experience. It seems like they may have wanted to get someone with a modicum of experience at some level.
On the positive side, maybe the players can really relate to Cam since he's not far removed from his playing days. |

I'm curious why you think that they would be hell bent on getting an assistant with experience? At this level, most assistant's come in immediately after their playing days are over. Can you name me one that has gone from one assistant's job to another in the ECHL? Probably can't. If so, it'd be a rare occurrence. Look, I'm all for having experience behind the bench. But I wouldn't be surprised if this move was made after careful consideration and multiple candidate interviews. You even said it - the ECHL is a DEVELOPMENTAL league. Essentially an entry level job. Why would you expect an assistant coach to have that much prior experience post-playing? SMH |
