The IHL went for YEARS with 6-10 teams. In fact, Until the 92 - 93 season the league had never had more than 11 teams. It was a tight regional circut with teams playing rivals.
The IHL Cyclones never won a Turner Cup, but I'm pretty sure the Cincinnati Mohawks (who won 5 years in a row starting in '53) didn't care that their league was a six team league in 53, a 9 team league in '54, back to a 6 team league in '55, '56 and '57. (Some of those guys are still alive... maybe you could call them and get their opinions!)
The one thing that most of the folks back home cared about was being able to see all 7 games in the championship series. Anyone who wanted to could. They brought busses up to Port Huron. What were there? A handfull of Cinci fans in Vegas?
Dayton had the same problem last year with both Florida and Idaho. It makes the finals much less fun, IMO, for a fan when you can't watch all the games in person.

| Comparing this "new" IHL to the original is a joke and I can't take that "championship" seriously. I really wouldn't be that excited if we finished five spots ahead of the last place team and deemed champions. There's men's leagues with more teams than this, and the original IHL was a legitimate Triple-A league, not just another Single-A league. Sure, the IHL had 6 teams, 50 YEARS AGO. I'm sure it's great for the fans and i'm glad that they have hockey in their cities, but the IHL as we knew it is long dead and gone. |

The UHL is also AA. It doesn't have as many AHL/NHL contracted prospects as the ECHL does, but it also has a higher number of veteran players on each team. The quality of hockey is very similar. I think that the ECHL is a bit quicker and more skilled than the UHL-but it's a pretty narrow distinction.
The NHL had 6 teams for quite some time. Championships had a bit of passion in that 6 team league as well.
Fort Wayne is an incredible hockey town. They have a long-50+ years- and rich hockey history. The Komets are one of the top 3-5 minor league hockey franchises in any league. Their fans are unbelievably passionate and loyal. They pay near-AHL prices for their tickets. They sold out (10,462) their game 7 on a Monday night. The enthusiasm in that building was every bit the equal to the USBA's for our KC winning game.
The Cyclones may someday have a following worthy of comparison to FTW's, but not yet. Not even close. Fort Wayne is probably, along with Hershey and Rochester, the model minor league hockey franchise.
The only bad thing about seeing the Komets win their thrilling triple OT Turner Cup victory was some idiot was sitting just 2 seats away from me. |

Giant who cares regarding their payroll. It's still a 6 team league in tiny markets in an inferior league. It's NHL-AHL-ECHL-everyone else. Great for Fort Wayne that they've had minor league hockey for 80 years, but get this: it's Ft. Wayne. It's a minor league town, you're supposed to have minor league sports. I bet Dayton has had minor league baseball a long time, too, and the Bummers have been around a while. Managing to keep a minor league team going in this city is a lot more challenging considering the competition for entertainment dollars that exists. Enjoy being better than the other 5 teams and your trophy, but it's still not what we saw with the IHL in recent history where it was a serious competitor to the AHL (and ahead of the ECHL). |

I would imagine that regularily watching the IHL/CoHL/UHL is pretty tough to stomach without a health buzz. You know I couldn't make more than a few nice comments about your beloved Komets semi-pro league
Watching and rooting for the bummers probably require a health dose or harder stuff |

This whole topic started out with Youngstown wanting to come to the ECHL instead
of the IHL. Then an idea about us forming our own league with the other ECHL north
teams got thrown in. Now it has become a talk on the "sacred" Fort Wayne Comets.This
is a team whose greatest claim was having fans even worse than Toledo when it comes
to visiting fans. Okay the fact they have kept a hockey team in one form or another
is good for them,but if the fans and management are so great,how come they aren't in the
AHL or even the ECHL.Kalamazoo admits they dropped down to save costs and I can't believe
the payroll is higher with the IHL then the ECHL. Wheeling who finished last in the North
would probably beat Fort Wayne in a 7 games series.Yes I'm nuts,but at least I have the
Kelly cup to back my team up.Oh thats right ,you have the Turner Cup-a trophy so much
more important because it is older! |
