A bit of advice for those of you learning to skate: either get the rental skates sharpened or go to Play it Again sports and get a pair of used skates ($20 or more). It will make it much easier.
Be careful when you get skates.. make sure they are comfortable because I have a pair of CCM and they hurt my feet like you wouldn't believe. You buy a cheap pair of skates and you will only be out on the ice for about twenty minutes and you are done. SO buy wisely and try them on first. |

Last time we were there, there were threegoalies! Not to mention some very good skaters. But it'd be fun to have an open hockey get together. |

| Must be something about those CCM's. They take forever to break in! I'm wearing a pair of my boyfriend's CCM's. They are a little big, but not enough that it makes a difference. I just wear good socks and we're good to go. Actually, they have enough room for me to throw some Dr. Scholl's gel inserts in there! That's an idea! |

Someone out there is talking my language now. If someone gets a game together, I'll play.
Btw, a couple of hints for making your skates not hurt:
1. Get good skates, cheap skates are made of hard plastic that doesn't give and will rub you raw. 2. Bake them. I think both Play it Again and Sports Plus have skate ovens. They'll bake them with low heat, then you lace them up loosely. This makes the skate mold to your feet. 3. Grin and bear it. Wear them three or four times and your feet will stop hurting unless you buy the $25 "special" skates.
Two things you really should never buy used, your skates and your helmet. The skates will have someone else's foot pattern molded into them and will hurt more than new skates (plus, would you really buy used shoes and put them on your feet??) and the helmet could be flawed or cracked and may not provide the protection you need (and once again the "who wore this before me" factor. |

My husband I will be camping each and every weekend for the entire summer. This is what we look forward to after Hockey season is over. We camp to relax, have fun, drink, do goofy stuff like water balloon wars, drive around on our Cyclones themed golf cart, trail ride on the carts, race the v-twin golf cart, play cornhole, fish, cruise on the boat, drink, drink, and drink. Play some hockey on the ps2 when we are at home. We would love to play broomball if anyone is interested sometime. Playing hockey would be good for me, but my husband can't skate. If anyone likes to camp, we'd love to have you join us some weekend. There's always sites available for tenters up to the large motorcoaches. Our private site can accomodate tents or even a pop-up, but there are some great overnight sites with a better view of the lake than ours.

| For some, there is no end of hockey season, just that cycle of the never-ending hockey year known as tryouts...will be spending most of the summer taking my son to junior tryouts. |

Good point. I bought some used ones and the first time I wore them my feet were hurting. I'll have to try some inserts. |

HA - yeah it must CCM skates - but I think mine are finally breaking in. THe last time we went skating, I was pretty good for the first hour. The few times before that, after about 15-20 minutes my feet would start hurting. But I think I may finally be getting over that hump!
Thanks for the tips on buying skates though! And I had no clue about the oven~good thing to look into! |

| I really didn't think the oven baking did anything noticeable personally when I got mine, but definitely spend the money on a good pair of skates. Don't even think about buying used, unless they were used just once. And understand that they're going to hurt, probably significantly for a little while until they're broken in, so skate often in small increments when you first get then until they get comfortable. I wouldn't spend less than 200 or 300 bucks on skates personally, you can get some pretty nice ones for 300-500. |

Puckhead, where did you get them baked? I baked mine myself and just wore them while I watched TV for an hour. When I took them off, you could actually see the imprint from my ankles in them. I never got blisters and they never hurt.
I definitely agree with buying the most skate you can afford. They make skates now that only weigh a couple of ounces. It makes a big difference when you're playing as far as fatigue and having quick feet at the end of the game.
You'll probably also find that the more expensive skates tend to last longer. Between coaching and playing, I'm on the ice at least 3 days a week and I've had my CCM Tacks for six years. |
