The Montreal Canadiens have traded center Kyle Chipchura, their first-round pick in 2004, to the Anaheim Ducks for a fourth-round draft pick in 2011.

The 23-year-old Chipchura appeared in 19 games with Montreal this season, going scoreless with a minus-19 rating.

This has a chance to be a really good trade for Anaheim. The Ducks will let him be what he is, a third-line center that kills penalties.

Chipchura scored his first goal of the season Saturday, beating former Anaheim Duck Ily Bryzgalov with a backhander, glove side.

Now out of Montreal, he no longer has to worry about playing on the worst line in the NHL.

Chips is really knocking em out in the NHL.

1 goal and no assists in 27 games this season. Former first round picks get chance after chance after chance.

It would be richly ironic if Desharnais ends up getting his NHL chance with Anaheim.

There could possibly be a double suicide in the Cincinnati area which would only be understood by a few posters at Sec60.com-Cincinnati's only hockey message board.

Chips continues to knock 'em out in the NHL.

He's recorded 3 goals in his 20 games with Anaheim since the trade. Combined with his 0 points in 20 games with Montreal, Kyle has now all of 3 goals and ZERO assists in 39 games.

One hell of a playmaker, this guy. LOL. I mean, seriously. ZERO assists in 39 games? How is that even possible. The fact that this guy can't pass to save his life is obvious. He also musn't be very lucky. Most goalies have an assist after 39 games.

Every player's worth isn't measured in goals and assists, but a lot of fans don't understand the game well enough to be able to see that.

Chipchura isn't a scorer. That's not his role in Anaheim. He wins faceoffs, kills penalties, wins battles for the puck along the wall, and gets the puck out of his zone. That's his role there, and they're pleased with how he's played since obtaining him from Montreal.

Samuel Pahlsson wasn't a big point producer, either, but he was one of the most valuable players on the 2007 Stanley Cup team in Anaheim.

No, dschlockie. Wrong again. At least in your assertion of my understanding of role players.

A player whose passing ability is so sub par that he can go half a season without an assist is not of NHL caliber.

Chipura is a bust who is only in the NHL now because of his first round draft pick status.

He's winning a whopping 52% of his faceoffs-he's a breakeven player on them.

If he wins so many battles along the boards, then it would only follow that he'd have at least an assist.

He's managed to accure a -15 rating despite allegedly being a penalty killer (where minuses don't occur) and playing a whopping 10 minutes per game.

Your analysis is typical donniespeak: all "insight" and no facts. I'm sure that you have been in close contact with the Anaheim brass who have kept you abreast of all the details. LOL. Chipura is a bust. Your understanding of what a role player needs to bring to the table needs to be adjusted.

But, I'm not expecting that. You consider the mediocre Kunitz a "top 6" forward. A top sixer who has accumulated all of 5 goals in 59 playoff games. He's a coattails rider, not an impact player. LOL.

There is a difference between not being a big point guy, and being a center who cant record an assist in 39 games, HOWEVER, he wasnt drafted to be a 4th line penalty killer

He is a shade over 50% in faceoffs with anaheim and does spend a good chunk of his time on the PK and hardly ever on the ice for PP. And he is -5 with the Ducks.

Still no explanation as to why he cant get an assist, thats just unreal.

That's just the thing, though. First round picks are not first round picks because they do the little things. First round picks who only succeed in doing the little things end up being labeled as busts.

6th rounders who do well doing the little things are called "finds." I could go on, but I think the dots are close enough to draw a line between.

It will be hard to call him a bust if he ends up playing 10 years in the National Hockey League. He was never expected to be a big point producer in the NHL. The Canadiens didn't draft him with that expectation, just as they didn't expect Bob Gainey to score a lot of goals or make plays when they drafted him in the first round in the 70's. They thought Chipchura would be able to contribute a little more offensively than he's shown, though.

What an NHL team expects and what the fans expect, though, are going to be two different things, especially in a city like Montreal or Toronto. Even if the attitudes of the NHL are changing, whereing a good defensive forward is worth his weight in gold, the fans (and the media by symbiosis) are going to think differently.
