Will Cyclones fans support the USHL Cincinnati Monarchs in their 2010/2011 season?

Not me. Cyclones take enough of my time, plus that isn't exactly a original name. There was a basketball team here named that.

No, sir. The NBA team in Cincinnati was the Cincinnati Royals, which moved to Kansas City and became the Kansas City Kings and ultimately moved to Sacramento.

Wrong. There was a basketball team here in 2004 called the Cincinnati Monarchs in the ABA league.

Haha... I completely forgot about that!

After the Cincinnati Stuff dissolved my basketball-loving heart was so broken that I stopped paying attention.

I have no issues supporting 2 teams. They arent in competing leagues, and the only thing better than hockey is more hockey.

As for the name, i like it. This is the 'Queen City', and they are just trying to keep the royal/regal theme going.

i will always support the cyclones first. it there is nothing else going on i might check it out.

part would depend on the cost though. even the the QC Stream are even lower down the food chain i can get my hockey fix with them, since it's cheap and 5 minutes from my house. as a season ticket holder for the cyclones i pay $10 per game and i can't see myself spending the same or more to watch junior hockey than i do to see the 'clones.

What is the USHL? Nothing on the web site, and where would they play?

My answer is a lot like elvis's ... it all comes down to how you define "support". I would want any local team to succeed and would never tell someone not to go to a game of another team. That being said, I wouldn't be buying a ticket package or anything because I don't have the cash flow nor time to take in that many games between two teams when the Cyclones will always be first. I would take in a game or two, but it would depend on cost, really. The level of play and overall experience, since I've never seen the USHL live, would of course also have an effect on if I came back for a second game.

Also, I must ask as usual when a topic like this comes up ... source?

Ok, will try to answer some questions as well as my opinion. And before someone rips me for being biased, yes my son plays in the league, but I'll try to stick to the facts.

* The USHL (United States Hockey League) is the top tier of Junior A hockey in the US. (http://www.ushl.com) It's not quite on par with the Canadian Major Junior leagues but has really closed the gap within the past couple years. It is several steps above the Queen City Steam in overall talent levels.

* Unlike the major junior leagues, players are not paid stipends and are therefore eligible to play NCAA hockey. It is the top source of DI players (180+ college commitments on current rosters - 14 teams).

* There was a recent study (will look for the link) that shows that the USHL actually has produced more NHL players per team than the Canadian Major Juniors. USHL has 14 teams (and 112 current NHL players) and there are 60 major junior teams.

* Players in the USHL are 15-20 in age and are the cream of the crop of their age group. Yes, there are still top US players that go the major junior route, but most opt for the USHL. DOn't be quick to dismiss this as high school hockey, because despite their age, this is very good and competitive hockey.

* Ask the Cyclones coaching staff their opinion of the league and take note of how many current & past Cyclones players are USHL alumni.

* The USHL is looking to expand, so there is lots of talk about potential cities where new teams might end up. USA Hockey is getting some big $$$$ in support of their new player development model which includes expanding the USHL to 20 teams "in the very near term". I haven't heard anything specifically about Cincinnati, but that doesn't mean it's not an option - frankly any city in the midwest with an available hockey facility could be considered a candidate. I've heard rumors about Louisville and Evansville for example.

* That said, I'm not sure if Cincinnati would be a good location for the league or not. It has prospered in small midwest towns where the league is essentially the only game in town, but has struggled to get crowds in places like Chicago where there are many other hockey options for fans. To succeed here, I would think that some partnering with the Cyclones would be critical, things like trying to minimze schedule conflicts, some joint marketing efforts, etc.

All IMHO of course...

And to answer this thread's initial question - would I support it? My answer would be the same as a couple others - it depends on what else is going on. The number of Cyclones games I get to is limited as I often travel to watch the kid play, so if the USHL team the only game in town when I'm here I'd defintely go.

My son scheduled to go to school next fall, but he would still have a year of junior eligibility left, so if it happened that a team came here and he were to play here by some chance (very, very remote chance), then sorry Cyclones...lol

The USHL had two players selected in the first round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Montreal selected Omaha's Louis LeBlanc while Columbus chose Chicago's John Moore.

I go to several USHL games a year in Indianapolis and find the product to be just as entertaining and exciting to watch as the ECHL.

I would be a little concerned about any other hockey team in Cincinnati, regardless of which league. Lets face it, the majority of people who attend Cyclones games are casual fans. With it being cheaper, I would think it is sure to draw even some of the fan base away.

Minor league hockey in Cincinnati is fragile enough. I would hate to see competition on any level. I do admit I don't have the knowledge about it as those of you posting on this. I'm just replying to the initial topic.

A USHL team at the Gardens wouldn't have to have a cheaper ticket price to be a problem for the Cyclones.

Perhaps. But you can't have two teams competing for the same hockey dollar...not in Cincinnati. I think there is little doubt it would cause competition for the limited fan base there is and one would not survive.

If the USHL has a lower overhead, I am very confident some kind of "Price war" would emerge, with only one survivor. No one will convince me it will not be the beginning of the end for the Cyclones. We've already seen that once, and I don't want to go through it again.
