CINCINNATI, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones will play the South Carolina Stingrays in the opening round of the 2010 Kelly Cup playoffs. The best of five series will begin at U.S. Bank Arena on Tuesday, April 6 at 7:30pm. Game two will take place in Cincinnati the following night (Wednesday, April 7) also at 7:30pm.
The series then shifts to the North Charleston Coliseum, where game three will be played Friday night (April 9) at 7pm. The fourth game, if necessary, would be played in South Carolina on Saturday, April 10 also at 7pm. If the decisive fifth game is needed, it would also be played at the North Charleston Coliseum on Sunday, April 11 at 7pm. Any of these games would be carried on ESPN 1530.
The Cyclones finished the 2009-10 season with a 44-25-3 record (91 standings points), second-best in the North Division of the American Conference. Cincinnati won the second-most games (44) in team history en route to their fourth straight appearance in the postseason. Two years ago, Cincinnati claimed its first-ever Kelly Cup championship. This is the third straight year that the Cyclones and Stingrays have met in the playoffs. The other two times the showdown was in the American Conference championship series. Cincinnati won three of the four meetings between the teams in the regular season.
This is the matchup of the fourth-seeded (South Carolina) and fifth-seeded (Cincinnati) teams in the American Conference. The winner of the best-of-five series will take on the winner of the first-seed (Charlotte) and eighth-seed (Toledo) matchup. The rest of the American Conference has second-seed (Kalamazoo) playing the seventh-seed (Reading) and the third-seed (Elmira) will battle sixth-seed (Florida). After the first round, all series become best-of-seven affairs.
South Carolina finished the season at 41-19-12 (94 standings points), tied with Charlotte for the South Division and American Conference championship. The Checkers take the top spot based on tie breakers. Kalamazoo also tied for the conference championship. The top three seeds all ended with 94 points. Ironically, the Cyclones led the American Conference in victories (44), but will not have home ice advantage in the round.
The Cyclones 2010 postseason is sponsored by USA Collision Centers and all games will be carried on the internet at www.cycloneshockey.com. All Kelly Cup playoff road games will be carried on ESPN 1530 as well.
Games one and two will be 'Game A' and 'Game B' for those holding season tickets. Tickets for future games will be announced as rounds are advanced. Tuesday's game will be a 'Big Beer Tuesday' with 24 ounce Labatts, Molson and Molson Ice beers priced at two dollars each. Wednesday's game will be a 'Wet Wednesday' with twelve ounce Miller High Life and Pabst Blue Ribbon beers priced at one dollar each.
Tickets for all Cyclones Kelly Cup playoff games can be purchased at the U.S. Bank Arena box office, all Ticketmaster outlets including select Kroger stores, charge by phone at 800-745-3000 or online at www.ticketmaster.com. No doubt this will be a very tough series. Making things even tougher will be if we don't get Mayer back and this happens to go five games. Five games in six nights would be brutal for anyone, let alone a rookie under this kind of pressure.
I will certainly be there Tuesday night but have class on Monday and Wednesday nights so I won't make game two. In any event...

5 playoff games in 6 days, with a long trip on the one day off... Thats too much to ask of ANY goaltender.
I hope somebody somewhere has a plan or this might be a very short trip to the playoffs.

Lets not forget the 'rays (and their goalie) have to do it as well. on top of that despite their home ice advantage they have to make the trip up here first which could play to the cyclones advantage.... |

I agree with Bebe. I would not like to have home ice and possible play one game out of three. Hope the Cyclones can take advantage of opening the first two at home.
Just remember the Reds have a game Wednesday night. Get down there earlier because parking will be a pain. Does Fat Cat charge more for Reds parking? |

Thank God the players don't worry like some of the fans do, geez. First people are worried about Toledo, now they're worried about a rookie goalie playing in the playoffs. Where's everyone's confidence? We will be fine. We have something no other team has, Chuck Weber. Everybody be there and be loud!!!! |

I'm not worried about a rookie goalie per se...I'm concerned about no one behind him and if it goes five games, that is a tremendous burden. Not just on a rookie but on anyone. I even mentioned before I wasn't as concerned about who we played or even losing MVG and Cashman as I am no one behind Smith. |

I also don't care about Smith's rookieness.
What I'm worried about is... Day 1 - Game Day 2 - Game Day 3 - ~10 hour bus ride Day 4 - Game Day 5 - Game Day 6 - Game
Thats a HUGE ask of a tender, especially in the playoffs. Maybe we can at least get Mayer back for one of those games. He should be well rested as he is just sitting on the bench behind Ced, and Hamilton does not play Wednesday or Sunday.

Regardless of of who ends up on our playoff roster, I agree with Catch22. In a condensed 5 game series the the Boys can't afford to fall behind in the series. Game 1 will be huge.
The bus ride between game 2 and 3 is offset by both teams going through it. Luckily South Carolina could find themselves in a similar goal tending situation since their 2 all-star goalies, Ford and Holtby, are not currently on their roster. The extra travel that SC has to endure for game 1 could be a big factor. |

SC's goalie will have to do the same thing and as elvis mentioned SC has to make 2 bus trips to the cyclones 1. Home ice advantage and you have to make 2 ten hour bus trips, I'd say it sucks to be SC. At this point in the season it doesn't matter how long bus trips are or how many games are being played in a short number of days. It's about a 2 month battle for echl supremacy. You find a way to get through it, you don't make excuses, you just come to play every game and get the job done regardless of the circumstances. |

Ford will be on our playoff roster, but Holtby won't be back. As far as the travel goes.... the Rays planned to do the first two on the road (if they had home ice) no matter who they played. That was decided a couple weeks ago. They got to Cincy early this morning, so they'll have a day to shake off the bus legs. Nothing to do now, but throw the puck out there and see who gets it done.
Best of luck. |

I think some of you are missing my point. Forget rookie and playoffs and who has to travel where and all that. Its unheard of to play 5 games in 6 days with a starter and an EBUG. Physically, thats just too much to ask of a guy, and while its nice to have Landsdowne available for emergencies, I don't think we want to rely on him in the playoffs. I'm pretty sure he hasn't played a single minute all year.
If SC is in the same boat, then that balances things a bit, but its still a crappy situation.
I'm hoping the reason we haven't seen a college/free agent goalie signed in the past few days is because there IS a plan, and that plan is for Mayer to play on Hamilton's off days.
My fears here are not remotely about faith in Smith. They are about simply exceeding his physical limits. You don't ask a pitcher to start 4 games in one week. |

I agree. Both SC and Charlotte used different goalies on Fri/Sat night. I looked a month ago or so and found how much worse our record was and our GAA was when we used the same goalie on back to back nights as opposed to switching them. Over a goal/game difference in the GAA in the second game when same goalie plays both games rather than switching. This series calls for three games in three nights in SC. Five games in six nights is unheard of for one goalie.
Lets hope Mayer is back some time before Wed's game. Hamilton plays Tuesday night and then Friday and Saturday. They have clinched all they can clinch prior to their playoffs. Let them find another backup for the weekend and send Mayer back after Tuesday's game--as well as LaCroix who would have great motivation versus his old team |

Lets not forget in the 10 playoff games in 06-07 Ceddy played all of them and if it wasnt for the game 6 and 7 team meltdown against Dayton we would have advanced, and during the 07-08 season Ceddy played the last 8 games of the playoffs with Max in reserve and in 08 we liked the results of playing the same goalie for 8 games, and 07 played 10 straight and did win 6 of 10 |

You are correct BP...but none of those had 5 games in 6 days with a 10 hours bus ride in between.
I'm sure Coach Weber has everything in hand and has a plan in motion. |
