CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, announced today that they have agreed to terms with forward Matt McIlvane.

McIlvane (MAC-ill-vane), a 25-year-old, Naperville, Illinois native comes to Cincinnati for his first season in the ECHL. In an injury-shortened 2010-11 campaign, the fourth-year pro logged seven games with the Bloomington Prairie Thunder (Central Hockey League) and three games with the Peoria Rivermen (American Hockey League). Collectively as a professional, the six-foot, 207-pound forward has earned 39 points (17 goals, 22 assists) and 88 penalty minutes in 98 career contests.

“Matt competes in all the areas that make you successful,” said Cyclones Head Coach Jarrod Skalde. “He is a tremendous penalty killer, he completes every night, and he makes the people around him better. When you can add a quality person like him who gives it his all in every game and every practice, it’s going to make your hockey team better.”

This year will be the second time that McIlvane has played under Skalde; in 2009-10, the two shared the same bench in Bloomington. Prior to going pro, McIlvane played collegiately at The Ohio State University from 2004-08, where he amassed 52 points (15 goals, 37 assists) in 156 games. During his junior campaign, he was named the team’s alternate captain and captained the Buckeyes during his senior season in 2007-08.

The countdown to the 2011-12 season is officially underway! Secure your seats for this year’s Home Opener on Saturday, November 5 when the Cyclones welcome the Chicago Express to U.S. Bank Arena for the first time at 7:30pm. Contact a ticket representative today at 513.421.PUCK or log on to CyclonesHockey.com for more information. Fans can also get the latest team updates during the offseason on Facebook and Twitter.

...And on the eighth day, GOD created the Cyclones!

And there is your "Skalde guy" to replace Ehgo.

Hope he's a great penalty killer.

http://www.ECHL.com/everblades-acqure-conacher-from-cincinnati-p172338.

Now in addition to all these CHL players. we trade the rights to Connacher who had five goals and 2 assists in three games with us after college for a guy who spent his ECHL season last year with three different teams. With one week left in August, it would be nice to see a signing I could feel excited about. I am getting more and more concerned every day.

I am not too happy again with trading the rights to Conacher, but I am more unhappy to be trading a guy like Conacher for a good scorer in Snetsinger who we will not see because he is playing in ITALY!! SKALDE WHAT ARE YOU DOING??????????

I hate to say it, but I certainly have not seen much to get excited about. I am trying to stay positive just because I miss hockey, but I don't want to go through another season like last year. It was the first time I can actually remember being ready for a season to end.

conacher was not going to play in cinci, he signed an ahl contract with norfolk who has an affiliation with fla of the echl. if we would not of trade our rights to fla then he prob would of went to the chl if he did not make the admirals. at least we got the chance of getting something in return if snets does not stay overseas ( you never know what happens in europe).

Right about now the thing I'm most excited about is that we chose to go with the 12 game pack.

I soooooo totally hope I'm completely wrong, but so far nothing excites me about the team that is coming together.

I have a feeling you're not the only one by a long shot. There sure aren't many incentives to get more than that, and the exchange window takes longer to get through than walking around and just buying them.

This year was the first year where my schedule allowed me to even consider a season ticket package. I didn't think twice about it back in July, but I'm definitely getting buyer's remorse with each new bit of information on 'Skalde's Clones'.

I told myself I wouldn't badmouth Skalde and see what he could do this coming season since it will be his first true full year of being the coach. Getting rid of Barrett isn't helping though. Nothing we can do about it but just enjoy the games this year, I am sure if he doesn't improve the team he won't be here next year.

Remember a few years back when we didn't have hockey in Cincinnati and an unknown guy named Chuck Weber came in a signed a bunch of college kids and CHL/UHL players? That worked out better than anyone could have imagined.

We could have have had 4 years of mediocre hockey instead of prolific success. Call it kharma; the ying and the yang if you will. All the people jumping ship ie reducing ticket packages or not getting tix at all, seem more like typical "Cincinnati" sports fans (only rooting for a winner) than Cyclones fans or hockey fans. Sure everybody likes a winner and supporting a winner is easier than a mediocre team but I never once even considered not renewing my seats. I'm not saying that I'm better than anyone on here, just that I am a Cyclones fan and a hockey fan. I will be at the games win or lose, good or bad. I will be vocal if I don't like the way things are going. Do I like the way things are shaping up? Not really. I have my thoughts and I'll be posting them on CycWords soon enough. But I want to remind people that last season as the team struggled with mediocrity that the excuse was "Skalde came in late and got stuck with "Chuck's" team, let's see what happens when he has a full off season to recruit." Well, that's what we're getting. It may not be the team/players we want but we have to deal with it and support having a team in Cincinnati.

Ehgo-gate could be the defining moment in Skalde's career in Cincinnati. On the surface, what coach wouldn't want a defensively minded forward who's durable and good for roughly 50pts a year? I'd want him on my team. Perhaps it came down to money and Skalde feeling that he could get a couple solid younger players for what he could get 1 Barret Ehgoetz for. All we know is that he wasn't invited back and it's not a popular decision.

As far as the new guys my concern is most of them have +/- ratings on the minus side. The running joke is can they kill penalties? My question is can they play defence?

While the list of signees doesn't seem to be very impressive or exciting, lets remember that a real key to this year's success will, as always, be the NHL/AHL assignees from Milwaukee and San Antonio including the goalies along with veteran ECHL players cut from their AHL tryouts. Some of the players signed now to Cyclone ECHL contracts won't make the team and most of the others will be bottom of the roster players.

My concern is that Milwaukee tends to keep their young talent on the bench rather than here developing, and the Florida franchise has a hard time filling its own roster with quality players let alone have the depth to support San Antonio and the Cyclones. The key to the first cup were the players assigned by Montreal. Lets hope we get a couple of exciting first line forwards from these affiliates along with a solid goalie and a few experienced defensemen as well as some quality AHL training camp cuts.

The problem with the affiliate players is that if they are good, they are gone. The two keys to success in this league in terms of personnel are a good base of team contracted players (you know, like that Ehgo guy) and being able to farm and sign contributing players to backfill the call-ups and injurys.

Skalde wasn't very good at the 2nd part last year, and the first part hasn't looked impressive this year.

Again, I hope I'm horribly wrong, but on the surface it looks like a bunch of young guys with minus numbers and a few guys who play rough. That's not a great recipe for winning hockey. Fun to watch in a Charlestown Chiefs sort of way... Maybe.

Disagree with you somewhat Catch. The quality of the guys signed is suspect but guys who are signing now are a dime a dozen for the most part--career ECHL/CHL guys looking to catch on or non draftees looking to start their career. They are the only ones signing ECHL contracts at this time of year. The quality players who will make a difference will be in AHL camps either as a draftee of the parent or on a tryout and either get sent down on a two way, or cut and then look for an ECHL deal.

While I love Egho and wish he stayed, the fact that he was our number one scorer last year points to why we had such an awful year and backs up my point. He is solid two way player and great leader but you wont win with a guy like that as your number one center and leading scorer. There was no one like David or Cedric on the team last year. Egho should have been the center on the second line but we had no one from either affiliate on the top line!!!. I do agree that you stand the chance of losing them to an AHL call up and teams like Reading and Wheeling were hit hard, but if you don't have players who have that potential of being called up, all you are left with is a team like we had last year!! My guess is that more than half of these early signings won't even make the team. They will start camp and be cut as players filter down from AHL camps either as cuts from those camps or as assignees. I hope for a few quality assignees augmented with some experienced cuts.

Yes, but you are looking at it in one direction.

Webbers cup teams both had to deal with a HUGE amount of call-ups and the constant revolving door of having two NHL affiliates, yet they managed to keep winning. A huge part of that was a core of solid two way players and the ability to scout and backfill.

The ONLY real contributor we had come in late last year was Foster, and let's face it, he was the ONLY reason that sorry team backed into the playoffs.

In short, yes, a nice contribution from affiliate players is important, but if you hang your hat solely on that you are likely screwed.
What I'd rather see as the contracted players are the solid 2 way vets that have career plus numbers. Not flashy young guys who are generally minus and just want to score. That's likely what you'll get from the NHL offices anyway (and again, if they play well... Bye).
