CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones (22-15-0-6) sparked a three-goal comeback in third period and went on to earn a 5-4 shootout win over the Trenton Titans (15-24-3-4) in front of 4,496 on Pink in the Rink Night at U.S. Bank Arena on Friday night.
The Titans jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first seven minutes the opening stanza as Rob Bordson and Chase Langeraap each potted goals through Cyclones netmidner Chet Pickard (W, 21 saves, 9-10-0-1). However, Cincinnati responded with a goal by Dan Eves at 14:27 – which extended his goal-scoring streak to five games – making it 2-1 Trenton after 20 minutes.
Trenton regained the two-goal cushion just 1:01 into the middle frame when Adam Presizniuk blasted in his ninth of the year, making it 3-1. And despite getting a pair of power plays in the period, Cincinnati trailed 3-1 at the second intermission.
Just 1:01 into the third, Cory Syvret delivered to what appeared to be a game-sealing goal, pushing Trenton ahead 4-1. Yet, Cincinnati would make another incredible comeback in the final frame. Justin Vaive tipped home his fourth goal of the season past Titans goaltender Nick Niedert (L, 31 saves, 2-0-0-1) to make it 4-2. Then, Eves buried his second lamp lighter of the night at 6:41, pulling the Cyclones within one. Finally, at 7:42 Rob Slaney worked his way into the Titans’ slot and sent a glove-high wrist shot past Niedert and into the net for the game-tying strike.
After a frantic finish in regulation, the teams went into overtime tied at four but were both unable to find a game-winner. So for the eighth time this season, Cincinnati’s fate was decided in a shootout.
Mathieu Aubin and Dan Eves opened with back-to-back goals, answered by one from Titans defenseman Ray DiLauro. In round four, Ben Ryan notched a goal to give Cincinnati a chance to win it on a Pickard save. And when Dustin Cameron’s fifth round offering rang off the post, the Cyclones sealed a 5-4, come-from-behind victory. It was the second time in nine days that the Cyclones erased a three-goal deficit or greater to win a contest.

The Cyclones will close out a busy week on the ice with back-to-back games against the Toledo Walleye at the Huntington Center starting tomorrow night. Saturday’s tilt in Northwest Ohio is slated to start at 7:00pm with pre game coverage on the Cyclones Radio Network (1050-AM, America One) beginning at 6:45pm.

The CYclones have now played one goal games in 11 of the past 13 with the exceptions being a 4-1 win and a 3-0 loss. Of those 11 one goal games, they have won 7 but in terrifying fashion. Last night they come back from 3 goals down in third to win in a SO. Against SC they were tied 2-2 in the third before prevailing in both. Prior to that was the 5 goal comeback ( 3 goals down in the 3rd) against Toledo. The two wins before that were against K-Zoo and Chic where we scored the tying goal in the last minute and won in overtime. The seventh one goal win this this stretch was a win against Wheeling where we were down 2-0 in the first period.
While this shows great character on the team to come back so often ( was really impressed with the very personal and intense way his teammates greeted Chet last night after the game in which he struggled again), I would hope they would begin to kick the intensity level up before such dramatic comebacks are required. Seems they play a much more cautious game when they get ahead which doesn't seem to suit their talent as much. It would also add a few years to my life to sit through an easy home win now and then. |

Last night was 2 periods of terrible hockey against a very mediocre club with an even shorter bench than ours. And once again for much of the game Chet looked like he'd struggle to stop a beach ball.
As noted, the character is great, but it'd be nice if they didn't have to rely on it so much.
And why in the world can't this Cyclones club keep 6 defensemen on the bench? I can understand being short sometimes but this is just getting ridiculous.
4 d-men plus Liambas... Again. Somebody please fix this.
