Head Coach Jarrod Skalde to Return to Cyclones in 2012-13
CINCINNATI , Ohio – The Cincinnati Cyclones, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Florida Panthers and Nashville Predators, announced today that Head Coach Jarrod Skalde has received a one-year contract extension through the 2012-13 season.
This fall, Skalde will embark on his 21st season of professional hockey and his third behind the bench of the Cyclones. Since receiving the position in 2010-11, he has accumulated a record of 68-57-8-11 and saw significant improvement in many statistical categories this past year. In 2011-12, he led Cincinnati to the second-best home record in the ECHL (26-7-0-3) and improved his overall winning percentage by more than two percent from his first season. Under Skalde’s leadership, Cincinnati was the fourth-least penalized team in the ECHL, being whistled for an average of 14.1 minutes per game. When they were shorthanded, however, the Cyclones were one of the league’s elite; their 84.0% penalty kill rate was second best in the Eastern Conference and sixth among all 20 teams.
“We’re very much looking forward to having Jarrod back for another season,” said Cyclones President Ray Harris. “His leadership, coaching style, and professionalism has been a tremendous asset to our organization. While we didn’t reach our ultimate goal last year, I am confident that he is the right choice to lead the Cyclones back to a Kelly Cup Championship.”
Skalde earned his 100th professional coaching win on December 9, 2011 when the Cyclones defeated Toledo by a 4-3 final score. A season ago, Skalde helped continue the Cincinnati tradition of grooming future stars, as a total of 25 players were called up to the American Hockey League, amounting to more than 300 games played at the Triple-A level.
“When you’re looking for an affiliate, you want someone who has the experience and the right mindset for developing players and that’s what Jarrod has done,” said Nashville Predators Assistant General Manager Paul Fenton. “He’s been able to recommend players to us that have come up and have helped and vice versa. It’s been a great working relationship.”
“We are very excited that Jarrod is back for another year,” said Florida Panthers Assistant General Manager Mike Santos. “We really look forward to his continued development of our players.”
Selected by the New Jersey Devils in the second round of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft, Skalde went on to log 115 games with eight different teams in the National Hockey League. In addition to the Devils, he played for the Chicago Blackhawks, Atlanta Thrashers, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, San Jose Sharks, Dallas Stars, Calgary Flames and Philadelphia Flyers. He also played professionally in the IHL, AHL, Switzerland, Sweden and Japan during a career that spanned 1,071 games. In 1992-93, Skalde appeared in four games with the Cyclones – putting up three points (1 goal, 2 assists).
Skalde has learned the coaching craft from some of the best to ever stand behind the bench. He played for the legendary Herb Brooks, Stanley Cup Champion coach Ken Hitchcock, Jack Adams award-winner (NHL Coach of the Year) Bill Barber, and former Cincinnati Stingers great Robbie Ftorek.
“I feel fortunate to continue to be a part of such a great organization and fan base,” said Skalde. “We have a great nucleus to build around from last season and trust that this year will be a very successful one.”

His record speaks for itself! He didn't get it
Done in bloomington and he sure in the Hell
Isn't getting it done here! I say we have a protest
And have a walk out as soon as they drop the
Puck and leave for the 1st 5mins of the game to
Show the ownership that we are not happy
With them bring skalde back!! They can't bann us
All. Besides we are the backbone of this team if it
Wasn't for all the diehards and STH who do they have?

Honestly, at this point in the off-season, would we expect (or even want) anything different?
Skalde was given a pass his first season because he didn't have the entire off-season to get "his" guys. If there were no better coaching prospects out there today, why would you bring someone else in and give them the same disadvantage their first year? You'd need a full off-season and a second year to figure out if they were any good.
Seems like a better idea to give him 1 and ONLY 1 more year to get deep into the playoffs while you get the coaching scouts working the phones leading up to that as "Plan A". If Skalde does well in the playoffs, oh well, go with "Plan B".
Not that I'm advocating for a seemingly career .500 coach, but in his defense, I think at one point in April, the Cyclones led the league by a LARGE margin, on the number of callups. So if he keeps finding talent and keeps getting it picked from his roster, perhaps that might explain some things.
I know the guys has a family to care for here so I'm sure the Cyclones management has to take that into consideration too. So why not give him another year if what you see out on the landscape isn't overwhelmingly appealing?

I agree that it would be nice to make a longer playoff run and I'm sure that if Jarrod doesn't put together a decent run this year, his time may be over here. However, there is a lot that goes with the territory of being an ECHL head coach. One of those things is player development. This quote is very telling as to how Skalde is viewed within the affiliates.

Also, Jarrod gets about 99% of the credit for discovering Cory Conacher, a star in the making. The guy was undrafted and given no chance by anyone. He went on to do this (from the AHL):
Undrafted out of Canisius College, undersized at 5-foot-8, and living with type 1 diabetes since childhood, Cory Conacher continued to defy the odds when he earned an AHL contract after an impressive training camp with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and he went on to turn in one of the greatest rookie seasons in league history. The 22-year-old native of Burlington, Ont., led the AHL with 39 goals and finished second with 80 points, earning the Dudley “Red” Garrett Award as outstanding rookie and the Les Cunningham Award as the league’s most valuable player. He was a key contributor in the Admirals’ all-time record 28-game winning streak to end the regular season, and chipped in with 15 points in 18 playoff games as Norfolk won its first Calder Cup.
So, the organization(s) must think that Skalde has an eye for talent and, with his NHL playing experience, is able to prepare young players for the rigors of higher levels of play. |

I would love for this team, or hockey in Cincinnati period, to have enough season ticket holders and die hard fans to support the team completely, but the sad truth is that isn't the case. If it weren't for all the scout nights, beer drinking frat and sorority folks, and weekend promo's this team would still be struggling to average 2000 per game.

Wow, so much worng in this post. For starters, the only reason this decision being made now and not sooner after the season ended was they tried but couldn't find anyone else. What else you expect the NHL affiliates to say - "We hate him"??
And he had little to do with finding Conacher - that was all Carl Hudson recommending his college team mate after the NCAA season ended.
But if believing what you wrote helps, well, go for it... |

| The Cyclones have had numerous coaches some good, some bad, and some indifferent. That will never change my support for the team, and buying season tickets. If you do not want a the Cyclones in town because of a coach don't buy tickets, and they will fold this time forever. |

The Clones have pretty good marketing, so I have no doubt the will continue to bring in people into the arena due to the various promotions, cheap beer nights etc. Most of these folks wouldn't know a good coach from a bad coach. But their season ticket base - those fans who can tell the difference between good/bad play and coaching - could very well erode if the product is what they got the past two years.
For me - and I doubt my not buying tickets is going to bother the Clones at all - I'd rather spend my increasingly shrinking pot of discretionary funds to go watch my kid play and not support skalde and some of the players he's chosen to bring in.
And nobody hopes I'm wrong about skalde (and they kick ass this year) than me, and I'd be the first to admit it. But his track record doesn't give much hope... |

For those that love to sit behind the Cyclone's bench and yell and curse at Skalde, I would think you would be happy to see him back.
Anyone who has played professional hockey--let alone ever played in an organized league or even skated in a game-- or coached professional hockey please raise your hand!!. Anyone not raising your hand, you have no idea -nor do I-of what the profile of a good coach in the ECHL level of hockey looks like and how Skalde compares to that profile, but if Florida or Nashville thought he didn't fit the profile he would be gone. They do and he isn't.
I am a fan of hockey--love the sport-and go to Cyclone games to be entertained by the game and root for an exciting game and a win. Was I entertained last year and see the team win (including several come from behind thrillers?) "In 2011-12, he led Cincinnati to the second-best home record in the ECHL (26-7-0-3)." I got my money's worth at FBA and more and look forward to this season with or without Skalde. |
