The Cyclones have home ice advantage against GWT so they have to get 4 home games. I can understand not agreeing to a 3-4 series by why not make an exception for 2-3-1-1. Nick tweeted that GWT's building was booked so I guess there was just no way for that work within the time frame for the 2nd round.
2-5 makes a split in GWT huge for the 'Clones, but it's all for not if they can't figure out how to win at home again. |

| Wow !!. What an advantage. Still need to win one down there or they will have to win 4/5 at home. Maybe not playing their best right now but showed LOTS of guts last night coming from behind 3 times. That sort of gut check will only help in the future |

Should have been 1,2,5,7 at home, but US Bank Arena has Tim Tebow Friday night and the Dayglow rave thing Saturday night, so we swapped 1&2 for 3&4, which should have been 3,4,5,7 at home. But the golf tournament has every hotel anywhere near Atlanta booked, so they could not handle game 6.
So, that game will be here, giving us games 3-7 (if needed). However, if Game 6 is needed, Gwinnet will be the home team for rules purposes, so they will get the line change advantage and faceoff advantage. |

Great insight Guido. For what it's worth, Gwinnett's AWAY record was very close to their HOME record this year. Still, potentially playing 5 straight playoff games on the road will be tough. Will they practice at USBA or do they schedule ice time somewhere else? Is it the home team's responsibility to provide ice time for the visiting teams? |

======================================================
Message From Ownership Wednesday, April 17, 2013
As we move forward in our quest for the Kelly Cup, I regret to inform you that we will continue to have challenges with securing home dates at the Gwinnett Arena should we advance in the playoffs. The situation disappoints me beyond words as I know it does you as well.
As you may or may not know, the Gladiators are tenants at the Arena. We do not manage the building. Despite our attempts to change the policy, Arena management has repeatedly informed us that they will not hold or save tentative playoff dates for the Gladiators. This results in a severe lack of building availability during the Kelly Cup Playoff season.
It is a challenge simply beyond our control. We have been keenly aware that the day would come when we would be scrambling to find ice to play Kelly Cup Playoff games. Playoff dates are one of the items that we continually attempt to negotiate and we will continue to try and improve in future negotiations. While it is typical that a building will not always reserve specific weekend dates for their professional hockey teams in other markets, it is definitely not typical for a team to be left with virtually no chance to successfully schedule dates for a playoff run. We do not agree with the philosophy, but we will do our best to overcome it.
This situation will certainly affect our fans in the Conference Semi-Finals against Cincinnati if the series extends to a Game 6. Unfortunately, that game, if necessary, will have to be played in Cincinnati instead of Gwinnett. If the Gladiators are fortunate to advance beyond this round, these challenges will absolutely affect us in subsequent rounds as well. Our organization is deeply sorry for this. Please know that the situation also impacts our business model and it certainly is a challenge for the team.
However - despite these challenges - we have adopted a "NO EXCUSES" motto and our organization is completely committed to doing the best we possibly can to bring the 2012-2013 Kelly Cup to you - our dedicated fans. We will do our best to create a "home locker room" environment wherever we are and we hope that you will cheer on the team at every opportunity.
We cannot thank you enough for your support.
GO GLADIATORS!

They will practice at US Bank Arena. I'm not close enough to the finances but it is my understanding that it is a hospitality thing around the league to provide ice time for visiting teams. We even had Florida in the building for several days this season while they were on a road swing and not even playing the Cyclones. It did not make sense for them to return to Estero even with a layoff of several days between, say, Reading and Evansville.
However, if the ice is not available due to other arena activities, then they would be on their own to buy ice time at Northland or wherever they could get it.
By the way I admire the frankness of Gwinnett's press release. |
