Great win last night! The Gladiator appeared to be faster and playing with more intensity in the first 10-12 minutes last night. Also, the Cyclone power play was looking downright abysmal. Then, they seemed to wake up late in the first period and McFarland's quick goal in the second really energized them. What a thing of beauty that goal was! From there on, the Cyclone seized control. It was great to see the PP show some production.
The Cyclone seem to be much like a counter-punching boxer. They start slow, feel out the opponent and then get into a rhythm just waiting to capitalize on a mistake. It's worked thus far, but these slow starts are tough to take consistently.
Looking forward to tomorrow. |

| I think you will see slow starts from what we are use to in all playoffs games. First goals are even more of a key and no one one wants to fall behind. I agree once McFarland's first goal too place, it seemed like the whole strategy changed. Not only did the offense discover the middle of the ice in their offensive zone but really began to forecheck in the neutral and defensive zones. As good as the new offensive scheme was to watch, the forechecking was fantastic--even saw the Clones send two men deep in the defensive zone. Gwinnett just couldn't get going once they started heavy forechecking |

The first power play looked like an experiment with McFarland at the point. It didn't go well at all and they didn't do it again.
Aubin is pretty good back there though.
This is a really chippy series and both teams are guilty of playing a little dirty right now. Happens sometimes in playoff series and our boys were giving more than they were taking last night, which is just fine. Pelech especially isn't taking crap from anyone, and the boys clearly have hooked their wagon to Houser and take offense when someone touches him.
They just need to be careful about getting sent to the box for retaliation. Wilson especially got on the wrong end of that last night. |

The defense has really been getting it done. In a series and a half so far, the Clones have not allowed the opposing team's stud to really get going. Coatzee did not score a goal in the TOL series and Zabotel does not have a goal yet. Seems like the Clones are mimicking the Reds. Goaltending/Pitching has been solid, defense has been good, and the goals/runs come late in the game or not at all.
I agree that we are giving more than we are taking and that is not surprising against the Glads. The obvious upside is that we are taking them out of their offense. The downside would be giving PP opportunities and injuries. And something that always scares me in playoff games is that we could run into a referee that wants to control the game by calling everything he sees. Still, I think that you need to bring a big bag of knuckles into the playoffs with you if you want to win a championship. Even the finesse Clones teams of the past could play rough when they needed to. |
