"We want him to compete, to be on pucks, to drive the net. He knows that." - Montreal Canadiens head coach Michel Therrien on former Cyclones center David Desharnais, whose production tailed off last season after signing a contract extension.

From the Canadian's press:
BROSSARD, Quebec -- It was only the first scrimmage of training camp, but Montreal Canadiens coach Michel Therrien may have given a little sneak preview Thursday as to the line combinations he'll use this season.

Canadiens new acquisition Daniel Briere was at right wing on a line with David Desharnais at center and Max Pacioretty on the left, two players who have spent basically the entirety of their professional careers together. With Briere and Desharnais both standing considerably less than 6 feet, it would be a combination lacking size but oozing with skill.

Desharnais was dropped from the first to the third line during Montreal's second game of the season.

But despite that, Desharnais has played in the BIGS far longer than you predicted.

Along with many NHL general managers, assistant general managers, scouts and coaches. You and other Cyclones fans tend to forget that part.

But those many NHL general managers, assistant general managers, coaches and scouts didn't come on a web site of Desharnais fans and predict his NHL demise. They had 1) better things to do, and 2) more class than to do that

Coming off a disappointing season, Desharnais' poor play has continued through the first two weeks of the 2013-14 season. The former Cyclones center is on pace for a mere 13 points.

If his play does not pick up, Desharnais will find himself a healthy scratch which will provide an opportunity for someone else to step into the lineup and if they play well, take his job.

Last season, Desharnais had 28 points in 48 games which is about a 50 point total for a full season. Perfectly acceptable for a $3.5 million cap hit.

He's in the first year of a 4 year $14 million deal, so he'll have time to work his way out of his slump. In fact, he already may be out of it as he had a good game in Vancouver and finally registered a point vs. Winnipeg.

Montreal is a smallish team and centers Galchenyuk and Eller are younger than Desharnais, with Galchenyuk being a potential franchise player. Plekanec is an excellent shutdown center with decent offensive capabilites, so David might end up being a victim of the numbers game in Montreal and end up being traded. Offensively starved teams like Nashville and Columbus might be a better long term fit for him.

In any case, Desharnais scored 60 points in his only full NHL season, scored at a 50 point clip last year and is in the first year of a $14 million, 4 year deal. He's a bonafide NHLer who will be playing in the NHL for years to come.

A 50-point season isn't acceptable if you're the first-line center. We'll see how long he plays past the contract Montreal regrets signing him to.

He's not the first player a team regrets signing to a long-term deal within months of doing so. Case in point: The Reds with second baseman Brandon Phillips. They're going to try and move him this winter.

For comparison to respond to Donnie's typical remarks, I looked at Boston as an example. So far this year Jerome Iginla, a future Hall of Famer, and Brad Marchant a palyer of small stature, each have one point apiece through five games on pace for a 16 point season. Patrice Bergeron, considered one of the best two way players in the league, has 2 points on pace for a 32 point season. Guess it is time for the Bruins to listen to Donnie and get rid of all three based on their performance through the first few games.

Unlike Desharnais, those guys on the Bruins contribute in other ways when they're not scoring.

Desharnais has never been known as a good two-way player, or someone that can get in on the forecheck and create turnovers, or win battles for pucks along the wall. He's ineffective, relatively useless, if he's not producing offensively.

Desharnais could make 5 goals a game and Donnie would still say he shouldn't be in the NHL. Donnie is just a troll. Good thing he is better at marketing roller coasters.

Everytime DD has a good game, Donnie is there is a comeback troll excuse to how he really did horrible. It is pointless in having a actual conversation with him.

Desharnais struggles continue, now on pace for less than 10 points this season.
